Re: Wynyard "Planning to Commit to Kentucky" Per Evan Daniels

I like it a lot if he really is a better prospect than Steven Adams at the same point. Adams is a very solid NBA player and is only 21. I bet he will be an all star at some point.

I wish people would just let the kid have his moment. I would think that he can commit to a school under his own power.

By the way, he just committed. Congratulations to him!

Somebody tell me about this kid. I follow recruiting pretty closely and I don't know anything about him. Is this the foreign kid?

Wonder where Chad Ford will retroactively place him in his mock draft 6 years from now?

Kentucky coach John Calipari compared Wynyard to current Cat Trey Lyles.

"He wants to mold me into a three-four swingman and a guy that can bang in the post as well," Wynyard told Rivals' Eric Bossi. "Kind of like Trey Lyles. I had a conversation with (Lyles). I had a talk with other guys about what I would want to do at Kentucky."

this young man is going to be very popular with the girls...

He's cute, has an accent AND plays basketball for UK.

I don't think anyone knows all that much about him. There's not all that much to know.

This is probably the biggest flyer Cal's taken on a recruit at UK. He's 16 years old, he's played almost 0 minutes against legit competition. He might be a top 10 talent, he might be the equivalent of a 3 star recruit. Not enough info to really make any kind of judgement.

The one thing he definitely has, though, is an NBA body. He's solid already, at 16, meaning he has the potential to be a beast when he's 18. Don't know how athletic he is, but there are no questions about his strength.

Given Cal's proven scouting ability, I'll go with it and assume the kid has huge upside. UK is not exactly in a position where it has to take gambles, so if Cal wants this kid, and will take a commit right now, he must think there's huge potential there.

I don't know much about him, but if coach thinks he is simillar to Trey I'll take it. Anyone else catch his team's mascot/nickname? Would probably be seen as a bit politically incorrect here lol

I have no opinion on this, really. I don't know enough.

I hope he stays in the '16 class as there aren't a lot of big men that class and we have some bigger targets in '15.

The New Zealand All-Blacks is the rugby team, and it refers to their jerseys (black shorts, black shirts).

The basketball team is called the Tall-Blacks in a similar fashion. It has nothing to do with race.

At 16 I would think there is growing left to do,if he is legit 6'9" and 230 now then 7' and 260 is not that far away.Cal must have seen something KAT like(meaning what he could be)in this kid.

LOL I know, right?

- I actually read something about this

All the sports teams in New Zealand more or less revolve around their rugby team: The rugby team is called the "All Blacks" This name actually came from their uniforms, which were all black (shorts, jerseys, socks, etc.)

You can probably guess why the basketball team is called the Tall Blacks

Here are some of the other team names based off the rugby team:

I love how you nail it and bring that female prespective.

Pretty sure he plays with both the U19 New Zealand national team, and the senior national team. If you can find some of their games, you may be able to find ya some Tai Wynyard.

I can't link it. You can find it but he told Evan Daniels he hasn't decided yet whether to be in the class of 15 or 16. 'Plenty of time to decide.'

Interesting get. Won't pretend that I know almost anything about him but in the context of the team itself, grabbing a bruiser type (according to the ol' reading matter) would be good for a team that looks like it may have need for that type of player.

This guy is the most 'obscure' commitment of Calipari's tenure but he obviously knows talent and what he's doing, so that's good enough for me. Looking forward to hearing more about Wynyard's development.

Not since Big Jorts have I known less about a recruit. That pic of Josh shooting free throws will be burned into my mind always. Even less is known about Tai. Trust in Cal as he knows a thing or two about talent.

That picture was great because I finally realized that Josh was a white guy. We had that and the. His picture in jorts but not much else until he was on campus. Amazing how his career went. Couldn't even find a picture of him to never playing to being a big time player on a final four team and getting drafted.

He was in serious consideration for making their FIBA team. He'll get bigger, he'll get better, but that's a good starting point.

love that last line:

Wynyard's mother broke down to ZagsBlog what impressed them most about each of the schools they had visited.

"Kentucky- complete focus on basketball

Villanova- academic success/focus

Texas- strength and conditioning coach"

also on a side note - this kid hasn't played with any other guys who have been paid has he ? sure hope not after the Kanter ordeal

From what I've read, his situation is nothing like Kanter's was. Many foreign players play college ball every year. Kanter's situation was unique in that Emmert had a personal vendetta given the UW decommitment and Enes did take over $30,000. Granted they were going to pay it back, but still.

If Enes had not decommitted from UW, he would have played college basketball.

If Cal wanted him, that's good enough for me. No way I would question Cal in recruiting in any way, shape, or form.

I read something today, a quote from an analyst, that the comparison they got from his game was similar to Josh Harrelson. But at his age his game is going to progress in bunches by the time he's 18 or 19 years old, so everyone is going to be comparing him to different players.
