With the greater depth and good recruiting classes getting some experience, there has been optimism. Michigan State was the evidence that we can rise to the occasion. The question is can NU keep focus and be consistent night in and night out. That is talent, experience, and coaching. Let’s see what Collins can do to get these guys to gel. Who is the leader and glue on this team?

Not sure we have a clear leader this year even though Gaines is the sole captain. It seems everyone is engaged and bought in, and the body language and enthusiasm has been excellent. This year we are blowing out teams we are supposed to blow out, and our only loss was due to a choke down the stretch that was on us. And we need a few more big upsets like MSU. Good start to the season, and hopefully we can keep it up.

We cannot consistently have Buie and Berry shoots lights out or the team to have great shooting nights and the other team to be missing shots they often make. We also can't expect all teams to come in a bit flat as MSU was--let's be honest they did not play us like Duke. But effort in all phases can be consistent and that is what I think we can look for.

It's difficult for any college basketball team to be consistent on a regular basis. The very best programs can play poorly and still just out-talent the bottom half of the their conference. NU doesn't have those types of players quite yet.

The reason for optimism is that between Buie, Berry, Audige, Kopp and Nance, and to a lesser extent Young and Beran, there are guys who can be "on" when others are "off" and that can potentially even out the team's performance.

2019 notwithstanding, I think NU fans have been spoiled by the football team's consistency, especially on the defensive side of the ball. At the end of the day, these are 18-22 year olds who aren't pros. Can only expect a certain amount of consistency. I just want to see them play HARD and CONFIDENT.
