As much as I hated that TU had to play Fresno State twice a year, I always enjoyed the way those 2 teams went at it when Tark was there. Some good players, including the guy who attacked another player with a Samurai sword which led to the orange prison suits. The game in 2000 that determined the regular season title is still one of the best basketball games I have ever witnessed in person.

Yeah. It's not easy to elevate high enough to get off a good shot over Eric Coley. Coley was stuck to him like glue on that sequence. I was standing right in front of the student section when he hit that shot. We go down and proceed to miss 3 point blank shots, Harrington, Coley, Kurtz. UGH

I still have nightmares about every loss that season and how one little play here and we are in the Final Four...that freaking team was so good

I just knew Eric would stop him on that possession. He had stopped everybody else. But Alexander made a pro move and a great shot. I think that is the game Kurtz missed the point blank shot at the buzzer and 9500 fans filed out silently.

Kurtz had the last one but Coley rebounded the original Harrington miss. I remember that line it was yesterday because we were planning to rush the court from the student side. One of the Rowdies said "We are rushing this court after Greg makes the shot".

Earlier today I heard Fraschilla talk about how Tark lured so many great players to Vegas. Tark used his connections with the Casinoi/Hotels and get the kids Valet jobs. It was a rather ingenious racket, the kids held "legitimate NCAA approved jobs", and i'm sure they reported every penny as income.

I.I, there may have been more then one, but I believe the point blank layup that was missed was against UNLV when they had shawn marion. I remember it was a very late night game started like 10 pm. for TV. 1999 maybe. we lost by one. many disappointed fans. That might be the one you were thinking of.

There are multitudes of great Tark stories out there. He was not afraid of the NCAA, or the college basketball establishment, or taking chances. One of the current UNLV beat writers said while he didn't cover Tark's era at UNLV, he has been able to talk with him many times and hear some of Tark's stories. Tark called out John Wooden and UCLA in 1972 for cheating in recruiting. He won a lawsuit vs. the NCAA. When he was coach of the Spurs he told the then GM that he needed a better PG to compete and the owner nixed that notion. Tark lasted 20 games and then a new set of coaches came in as well as a new GM and they went and got a PG, cue Greg Popovich.

Someone posted yesterday that UNLV's 1992 starting five was set to be:
Jason Kidd, Anderson Hunt, Shawn Kemp, JR Rider and Ed O'Bannon. There was also a chance that Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, and Chris Webber were also in the fold to be Rebels until the NCAA hit them with sanctions and UNLV fired Tarkanian. That would have been a great NBA team let alone an NCAA team.

+1 I remember that rebound by Shawn Marion. That was the loudest crowd at the Reynolds Center that I can remember.

I believe the game you refer to was TU's first loss in the Reynolds Center and Brandon Kurtz missed a layup in the closing seconds.

The 1998-99 WAC was a tough league and deserved more than 3 NCAA bids (Utah, New Mexico, TU). Tark's Fresno team was very tough as was Bill's TCU sqaud.

Yes, I stand corrected.. That loss was one of the most hyped games and electrifying atmosphere ever in the Reynolds Center. The other loss was the Fresno one with the same atmosphere.
