If there was ever a reason for the nchsaa 2to fix the playoffs this is a great example. There is no reason there should ever be teams with a bye in the first round. Then you add to that all the terrible teams that make it into the playoffs that should never be there in the small 1a. It needs some serious work

4A and 4AA also have byes. Because 1A and 4A have over 40 less football playing schools than 2A and 3A. If you want to complain about it, complain that the NCHSAA went to the 20-30-30-20 model in the first place.

What was the rationale for the 20-30-30-20 split?

More teams in 2a and 3a, therefore a larger percentage in playoffs.
He's asking why they did a 20-30-30-20 realignment split in the first place, not the reason for byes. And the answer to that question was to try to partially address the disparity between the smallest and largest schools in 1A and 4A, as its non issue at 2A and 3A level.

there are 113 teams 700ish-1000ish, and 113 teams 1000ish-1400ish. 76 teams under 600ish and 75 over 1600ish. The most schools are in the 2a and 3a range...

I'm not a fan of the current format myself, but until this realignment we we're having 1 or 2 win teams in the playoffs as well, who had no business being there, that being said I agree with mbdfan, we will see some rust for maybe the 1st half

I hate to admit it, but I agree with you.

1A and 4A should have went to 32 teams total and four rounds. Finish the Saturday before 2A and 3A. That is 43% of the schools.
2A and 3A with 64 teams is 55% of the schools. Pushing it but acceptable.

I worry about the teams with byes who also had the Nov.9th week off...3 weeks between games can really impact conditioning, rhythm, etc. Hopefully the state will move away from 48 team playoffs soon.
