Reading Teddy’s article in the Trib today about the lack of growth by Pete Nance this season has
me wondering if Nance might transfer out after the season.

With his hype coming in I’m sure he’s unhappy with where his game is at today. And with his lineage I’m sure he has aspirations to play for pay someday. I could see a scenario in today’s transfer crazy environment where he could feel another program could better help him develop.

Hope not, but I wonder...

Nance is doing fine, our expectations were a bit ahead of where he is, but he is showing growth. Next year will be the opportunity to show his stuff with a more experienced supporting staff.

That might be the case. But at the same time I wouldn't be shocked if Berran started over Nance at the 4 next year.

Maybe but I understood that Pete's family specifically kept him at a small school and tried to shield him from the "basketball or bust" mindset so he could make his own life decisions. That is one reason the jump to the big ten was a bigger adjustment for him than if he had spent a lot time in AAU etc..

"Expectations were a bit ahead of where he is" is an understatement. I am reminded of the article linked below with the following quote from Pete's high school coach:

“Pete is going to school where he has an opportunity to put them on the map and take their program to the next level,” Revere coach Dean Rahas said. “Northwestern got a steal. When it is all set and done, Pete will probably be the best player to ever play at Northwestern. I am very proud and excited for Pete. His best basketball is ahead of him. What we are seeing now is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Edit: It is worth noting that this article and quote came after Northwestern had just made the NCAA Tournament.

Nance will be a lot better when he starts playing like he is 6’10” versus 6’3”. I think he’s starting to get it- seen him be more aggressive in getting to the rim the last 5 or so games. Now he just needs to figure out how to finish.

Unfortunately, just when you think he is beginning to get it, he regresses. Hopefully he can put that part behind him-

Last year was like a Year 0 for him with mono. He is now going through a freshman's inconsistencies and growing pains. He also needs to develop his skills much more, learning to pick on shorter defenders in the post and developing a few more moves than the sky hook across the lane. I'm still a firm believer in Nance and think we could have something really good on our hands with our rotation of bigs.

Responding to the original post, the last name and the recruiting hype may end up creating pressure to transfer. But there's no program or coaching staff you could envision out there who wants him to succeed more than ours.

Wouldn't be surprised if he tested portal. Hope not.

why do we have to speculate on transfers when there is no real evidence of a player contemplating transferring?

It seems like this is thrown out there whenever we feel a player isn’t living up to their billing.

Because there have been 6 transfers (Vassar, Brown, Rap, Benson, Falzon and Ash) in the first 6 completed seasons onder Collins?

Because speculation is a huge part of why we are here. Without speculating there would not be much to talk about.

more when you add in Lieberman and Abrahamsson and Cher Adjieu...and Mike Turner

lot of length on that list.

We're really bringing out the Jewish Dwight Howard? (For the uninitiated, that's actually a nickname that Aaron Liberman had prior to arriving at NU.)

Grad transfers that don’t play much as undergrads don’t correlate to starters as Sophomores.

Ok, no way Beran stays after a 1-19 season. Boo is irritated that his playing time is being split with a LaCrosse player. Kopp has shown enough that he might want to play on an annual tourney team, maybe one in Texas. All of them are preparing to leave because the coach losses to many close games.

These scenarios are about as credible as Nance looking to leave. Maybe wild *** speculation comes true sometime. We’ll see.

Sure, I added a word, better now?
I'm dense tonight and still don't get it. Anyway, the original question was why expect a transfer, and my answer was because on average Collins has had one every season he's been at NU. There have probably been good reason for each and no regrets for some but the fact is lots of guys have left.

I am saying, transfers of graduates that don’t play should not be surprising. Even transfers of players not in the rotation are common in many places. Nance is a starter, transfers of starters have been rare in recent times. Don’t see the situation as comparable.

Most have not really had a chance to play here. Nash is getting plenty of minutes. As are all the players we now have other than maybe Greer

And out of the whole group of NU player transfers, I cannot think of any other than maybe Abrahamson who had a chance to play more than about 5 mpg (Benson might have had a few more but not many and with Jones and Young, I doubt he would have gotten many this year. The only one that would be anywhere close to that cutoff on the roster this year is Greer now that Jones is settling into a rotation

Plus since he has played his first couple years, it is unlikely (unless he gets injured) that he will have any eligibility as a grad

Just because you do not agree with someone, it does not make their perspective "wild speculation". What's wild for you is not for them.

I have wondered about Nance myself. Maybe I'm just too pessimistic. Players often break their collegiate careers in 1/2, play 2 years at one school, 2 years at another. And transfers are on the rise. I can list a few of the reasons why players transfer:
1) Not playing
2) Not getting along with the coach
3) Not trusting the coach
4) Wanting to win more
5) Feeling they are not a good fit where they are, and they can be elsewhere
6) Being closer to home
7) Needing a fresh start from taking heat from the fan base
8) Being "recruited"

#1 is definitely not happening. Others, who knows? I still think it's unlikely he transfers. But it's not wild to be concerned about the possibility

Kobe King just left a decent Wisconsin team where he was into his third season and was the second-highest scorer. Who knows what gets into the minds of college kids?
