Close on a house tomorrow, so too late to change our mind.

Close to Danville, close enough to Lexington and main street used to be a Buffalo trail.

Any low down we need to know?

<--- Lifelong resident.

Bluebird Cafe is great. Not even "great for a town like Stanford". It's outright great.

Downtown has really been refurbished over the last 10 years.

Much cleaner water than Danville.

Kentucky Depot is overrated except for the home fries and the rare times when they have fried chicken as a special.

If you have kids, we miss a lot of school for snow because we're a huge county with a ton of backroads.

Don't go to the Pizza Hut, they hate customers.

9 out of every 10 people smoke.

As for the house , check with the city to see if they have a code inspector now and when the office was established to check against the year your home was built . Lincoln county used to not have a inspector and nobody oversaw what the builders did .

And the Walmart parking lot in Stanford is the Walmart parking lot of Walmart parking lots.

When I was at Centre I used to drive to the Stanford Arby's sometimes when I got a craving for a roast beef sandwich. The Danville Arby's with its throwback of a brown sign freaked me out.

Also, the Stanford Guadalajara is absolutely awful. I ate there once expecting it to be like Danville's, but it was fiendishly bad. OP should avoid.

They have a drive in.

People that are deathly afraid of going wet

They have dueling barbers on each side of main street...pat and Dale. You can never get a haircut tho bc pat is always drunk and Dale is always asleep.

Many, many, many years ago they had a clothing store right there in downtown, mens clothing I believe but I can't be sure and I don't even know if it is there now. Anyway, I was in a spot and needed to stop in quickly and get something to wear and when you walked into the place they tried to act like they were finest London tailors ever to grace Savile Row. So choking down my laughter I made my purchase and wrote a check for it (this was back in the check-writing days) and they actually called the bank right there in front of me to verify funds.

The whole thing was hilarious.

Thanks for all the input! Looks like we made the right decision. It wouldn't have mattered though, back in December we were south of town on 1247 looking at a house and heading back to Stanford and there was a rainbow over Stanford. That's all it took for the wife. I tried hard to make her think it was over a house we were looking at on Herrington but that wouldn't work.

Why do all the Mexican restaurants have Guadalajara in the name? It's funny, we've been told how good the one in Danville is by friends in Lebanon...

There's 3 Gaudys in Danville...everyone has their regular bit the one on the hill is the best. Also there's little spin off Gaudalajaras by former employees in towns like junction city, perryville, etc. Basically a quesadilla empire down there

But yes...Stanford Gaudys is trash.

The best thing about Stanford is if you are coming in from the West then you can get a full head of steam coming down that hill to carry you all the way out of town and keep going.

History geeks like me love places like Stanford.

Lots of kentucky history in Stanford.

If I'm not mistaken, the courthouse still has legal documents written in deerskins from the Daniel Boone days.

For realz.

Dont go for a run or a bike ride there. The locals wont understand why you would ever want to do something like that and will run you off the road or chuck a can of chicken noodle soup at your head as they drive by. True story.

Look, I threw a can of chicken soup at your head because you run like you have cerebral palsy, ok?

Damn, should've known it was you when I saw this....

Lived in Stanford for 6 years. Not much I can add from the thread already. Glad I sold my house and got the hell out. To sum it up.
  • School system sucks. One of the worst in the state at every level.
  • Every person involved in local government is corrupt.
  • Voted down alcohol sales multiple times
  • Your driving to either Richmond, Danville or Lexington to work, play, shop or eat.
  • Hospital is newer but is mismanaged with poorly trained and educated employees.
  • No jobs
On the positive you got the Bluebird Cafe, shopping at Walmart on the 1st of the month. Fair in July and couple really good truck pulls. But if your moving in from Eastern KY this might be an upgrade.

Stanford is Hustonville's Mt. Pilot. Seriously tho, I like it's geographic location. I pass thru mostly. I wish you luck and expect you'll do fine.

I'm sure Stanford, KY is a wonderful, small town place to raise your kids. I should know, I grew up in small town America.

But I'm sorry when I hear the word Stanford I can think of only one thing. Colleen, an Irish Catholic with 7 siblings. I met her at Sandia Labs when she approached me about my mountain bike. From Toledo, OH she sported a degree in math from Michigan, and a Master's in Engineering from, well you guessed it Stanford. Very pretty, sweet, charming, and adorable. My kind of girl. God bless her wherever she is.
