Thanksgiving Dinner Thread

Plans, best/worst, weird things your family does.

Dinner is around 1:00. Don't eat it in the dark.

This is the first time in 30+ years I'm not traveling for TG. It's gonna be glorious. Don't have to rush kids to get ready for an hour drive. No awkward "well, it's about time to get on the road" conversations.

1. Turkey
2. Country Ham
3. anything from pork loin to an old shoe
4. City/sweet/honeybaked ham

Not sure what I'll do after. I've never been home right after since I was a child.

My family crushed Thanksgiving on Sunday. Probably the best meal ever. Mac n cheese was crazy. All the sides were great. Classic feast.

Headed to Phoenix AZ to have dinner with The Better Half’s oldest daughter. Dinner plans sound great. Looking forward to a little too much pumpkin pie and Cabernet, football, and tryptophan coma.

I make a really good Sweet Potato Casserole. I do not eat it, however. Everyone else seems to like it.

Eat a 2nd helping of something....usually a turkey or ham sammich......
Watch the Cowboys lose....

Wake up to hear my wife and sister-in-law go nuts over the darn computer Black Friday sales....
Try to find the old movies.....It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th, Holiday Inn/White Christmas....
Tell the women that, "No, I am not going to shop......no....."

My wife's family does not offer mashed potatoes at TG dinner. Damned blasphemers. And they always order the turkey fom the same place, and it's always dry but fine.
They do make fried corn casssrole, scalloped pineapple, sweet potato casserole, oyster dressing and Waldorf salad. They don;t play around.
I make a bad-*** broccoli/cheese casserole via Hilah and wife does the bananas rolled in Miracle Whip, then in mixed nuts- thingies.

Besides all the usuals, my wife’s family has fried oysters at thanksgiving. I have no idea how/or why they started this tradition, but they’re amazing. Deep fry the turkey, then throw the battered oysters into the hot grease.

Wife and her mother argue about how to fix foods but:
Oven roasted turkey

Brown gravy
cranberries (hate them myself)

cream corn (yuk)
Pecan Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Little smokies and deviled eggs for snacks until dinner
Some sort of powdered cookie

Tea for drinks.

That is the past and will still be the norm for us. Wife's mother and brother however have gone vegan earlier this year, not sure what they are bringing. Turkey smaller this year for us 13 lbs instead of 18-20 lbs.

Turkey in a baking bag, bone in roast, Mac and cheese, carrots, rice, sweet potato casserole. My fiancée’s family expects me to do a Tennessee style dressing since she brags on mine so much. I was gonna wait til Christmas but heck, anytime is a good time for dressing!

*My sister in law makes an artichoke heart bake which is an exceptional side compliment to turkey.

Man, I forgot the cranberry sauce.

Ocean Spray. Congealed/jellied. 1/2" slices. I'm not allowed to take it to the dinner as it might be competition for the nasty real stuff, but I eat it with the leftovers and anytime throughout the year I cook fowl. Leftover turkey breast on cheap white bread with a slice of cranberry gel in there. Yessir. The real moist-maker.

Mac n cheese is one of my favorites, but I think it takes a serious downgrade when you put it in a casserole dish and dry it out in the oven.

I've been making it following this recipe. Takes about 20 minutes total.
