Last night I went to the Carolina Syracuse game (wore orange, cheered for the Cuse and got tix very very cheap) anyway I was amazed at the banners. They literally have one for everything! Making the NCAA gets one, sweet 16, elite 8 and so on. They have mythical ones for acc champ (regular season) and tournament ones which make sense... for the kicker while I knew they had the helms title hanging with the "real" ones but they actually play a video before the game with different player talking about all the accomplishments and they state 6 national titles last like it's huge and emphasis the 6! Just thought it was hilarious.

Being a NY Giants fan, that would be like me saying they have 8 superbowl championships, when they really have 4 championships pre superbowl era and 4 superbowl championships
Been a Giants fan as long as a Duke fan, are you from NY

This is the newest Heel banner...think maybe it just went up this morning. Even had their usual huge crowd for the unveiling. Pisgah must have just missed it.

Hahaha! I wish I would of seen that! And it wasn't too full I guess that's why we got tickets so cheap. They even had some let's go orange chants going when they made a 12-0 run

No born and raised in NC, but started pulling for the Giants when I was around 7 and been a die hard for 30 years. Not sure why, cause everyone here pulled for Washington, Dallas, or San Fran.

I always wondered who started the participation trophy. I just figured it out, it had to be an alum from UNX. They probably also started up with who's supposed to bring the snacks and drinks for after games too.

Did you see the one for The Helms Trophy. That had to be special to see something like that. I bet no other college team has one of those hanging from the rafters.

I remember many Tar Heel fans telling me that they don't consider the Helms Trophy a national championship trophy, but I don't buy that for a moment. They have a banner, they have the trophy they trot out every chance they get, and they have this carpet in their locker room. Seems like they're pretty proud of this baker's joke.

Here are a couple of pics to show the trophy itself (looks like an urn), and the carpet. Only a program that's so insecure about their rival 8 miles away would stoop so low to claim this farce as a so-called championship. Other blue blood programs have one (or more) and don't publicize them.

Oh, and notice what it says on the carpet...National Champions, for all 6 years. Sounds like they consider the 'Helms' just as worthy as the others. Well, considering how much they've cheated over the years...maybe it is. Hell, maybe more.

It's also convenient how that 1924 "title" had never been heard of until Duke won back-to-backs.

Exactly, DevilDJ! If Duke wins a 6th the search will be on for another fake championship trophy. Maybe a Coca-Cola Trophy has a few trophies from the early 1900's tucked away...Roy would love that.

Me too, Dbav. My father was only 14 when the Helms was...um...awarded.

The best part is that Duke didn't win one until I was 10. So despite being 5-4 in my lifetime, it's actually 5-3 since Duke won its first and I have any memory of college basketball.

Go to hell Cheaters.

I've been alive during all 5 of Carolina's NCCA titles.
I was almost 40 before Duke won our 1st championship. That first title is the happiest I've been over any sporting championship...then, or now. And when the Devils repeated in '92, I almost died and went to heaven.

Is that true?? Hahaha that's hilarious

Admittedly this is anecdotal BUT...while that 1924 breadtruck banner may have been hanging in the rafters , unx never promoted it as anything NEAR a legit national title until '92. What's NOT anecdotal is that the holes now hang it right alongside their other ones as if it's equivalent...which it ain't.

Al Featherston commented on UNC's 1924 National Title a few years ago:

Time out for a brief discussion about UNC's so-called 1924 'Helms Foundation'
national title. UNC fans would have you believe that's a pre-NCAA poll that's
similar to the championships awarded in college football today.

It's not.

The Helms Foundation titles were awarded starting in the early 1940s. A committee
of so-called experts went back and determined champions from the 1920s and 1930s.

I have no idea who was on the committee, but I know their knowledge of basketball
history is not very good. While UNC did go 26-0 and win the Southern Conference
championship in Atlanta that season, the White Phantoms (as they were known) were
strictly a regional phenomenon. They played nobody outside the South.

The problem is that Southern basketball just wasn't very good in that era. UNC
found that out a year later when they repeated as Southern Conference champions,
but ventured north and lost three straight -- two by lopsided margins -- to Eastern
teams.

The best basketball in 1924 was played in the East and Midwest. And what the Helms
researchers ignored is that there was a national tournament that season, sponsored
by the AAU. Butler, which beat the teams that were perceived as the best in the
country, won that event and also claims a 1924 national title.

In another article by Featherston, I found myself chuckling a bit at these words:

News of UNC’s 1924 triumph, flashed from Atlanta to Chapel Hill via telegraph, set off a wild celebration on Franklin Street and suggestions that the triumphant White Phantoms should compete in the national tournament in Kansas City. But two days later, the faculty decided that the players had missed enough class and should return to their studies.

... Also, let's not forget that the committee that deliberated on the retroactive 1924 National Champion was made of one person, Bill Schroeder. A guy who never played, coached, or wrote about basketball. Seems pretty legit.

Hit banner dome for Duke-UNC '14, was impressed with the noise level. Baby blue faithful rushed the court & I realized we are clearly viewed in CH as the big brother.

Kansas also claims two Helms titles and 5 total national titles. Total and complete BS and just substantiates their inferiority complex.

What I find more comical is that UNCheat has actually won 3 Helms titles but 2 of them are the same years they won the NCAA title so I guess that makes the other 2 a mute point. But you can bet your a$$ if and when Duke wins another title or 2 they will hang 2 more Helms banners!

Thanks! The family went to a Duke Women's game against UNC. She had that sign saying "She may be little but was Lexi's Biggest fan." A guy from the GoDuke website pulled her on the court after the game and snapped that pic. Lexi also came into the stands to snap a few pics before the game started. I wish she could play on the Men's team.

As far as the UNC fans...they make my head hurt listen to them rationalize certain aspects of their team or the reason they lost.
