The Boston globe must love Coach Cal.....Not

Here we are. Kentucky, the No. 1-ranked team in the country - coached by John Calipari - is on the cusp of NCAA history, 31-0 after Saturday's win over Florida. Meanwhile, the folks at UMass have decided to retire Coach Cal's "number," and this weekend marks the 20th anniversary of him refusing to allow a Globe reporter to visit his home for Selection Sunday.
Sometimes there is not enough space in our newspaper to articulate all the thoughts, and state all the points, that need to be made.[/URL]
Let's start with this: John Calipari is a magnetic figure, undoubtedly the greatest college basketball recruiter of the 21st century. He works the NCAA's cesspool system better than any man alive. He is charismatic. He came to Amherst more than a quarter of a century ago as a Rick Pitino wannabe, but now he has vaulted over Pitino, and created the Brand of Cal. He is probably going to win a second national championship with Kentucky this year and is no doubt a swell dancer and would make for a fine dinner companion.
But as a Massachusetts taxpayer, I have a problem with UMass "retiring" Coach Cal's number.
Really? Bill Cosby's jersey is not available?

Who? Just another mouth piece with a platform expressing an opinion a million other anti-Calipari fans have. He's just trying to coattail the Cats success. The timing is evidence.

Finebaum had him on today...went after him pretty hard, and gave some serious eye rolls and such during the guy's answers to his questions...but I thought Paul should have mentioned how UMASS was a dog crap program before Cal and if not for Cal they would be a dog crap program of all time. Since this guy and others think Cal "Destroyed" UMASS LOL.

If you read the comments you'll see about half the locals don't even like the buffoon. He sounds ridiculous and petty, hanging on to a dislike of Calipari that started 20 years ago. He's in Boston, who really gives a crap.

Isn't this article close to a week old?

It's a dude trolling UK and Cal and our fans and yet someone feels the need to give him hits?

The guy was a total POS as well...did not give Cal any credit as a good coach. Just said he is a "great recruiter" as if that is all he is. He also said we were a NBA farmleague team.

I really wish Finebaum had pointed out (as Bilas did today on M&M) that UK had 6 guys come back when they could have went pro, including two Juniors. Paul could have done better with hitting the guy hard, thought he left him off easy on some of his answers.

I think dude being on Finebaum may be why some are talking about it today.

Shaughnessy did a few over-the-top hit pieces on Cal and UK some years ago. I don't remember any specifics and won't bother looking.

Hard to believe that Shaughnessy holds a grudge about what Calipari did to him and his friend 20 years ago-- dissed him by not allowing him into Cal's home, etc. Some reporters seem to feel so entitled that one would think they have narcissistic personality disorder. "Don't dis me, Ima tough guy!!!"

Shaughnessy is going to keep on writing these wildly over-the-top hit pieces. Similarly, pat, jeff, and dana and so on won't change.

Read some of the comments to the Shaughnessy article. Some are good, some are hilarious, some sound like they were written by Shaughnessy (and probably were).

Wow, what a hideous person. Say what you want about Cal, but to insinuate stuff about the players, having no evidence whatsoever . . . This is the same Dan Shaughnessy who ran us down before we throttled Cornell. I'm pretty sure he picked the Big Red in that one.

That was some of the nastiest sports writing I've come across in my life. I don't think I'm exaggerating. Does The Globe know that Shaughnessy is using their site to post blog-caliber bile? I guess they must.

hideous, indeed. When he stretched out there to drag Desmond Tutu into his ugly missive he created his own brand of shame. Like I said, classic hate pile fodder. Globe can suck my butt

Shaughnessy is notorious for writing negative crap about a lot of things. He is example 1A for the harshness of Boston media, followed shortly by AM sports talk radio types. A far cry from the Peter Gammons, Bob Ryan types that gave Boston sports media a stellar reputation in the 1970s/80s. He is nothing to be worried about, responded to, or even discussed. If page views dry up, maybe he'll go away.

Oh yeah. Literally, the *** clown comes right out and says that John Calipari is a dirt bag for not letting a man good enough to sleep with Desmond Tutu's daughter in his house.

I've decided to boycott these tools. The older I get, the more I realize that A LOT of "adults" are so childish in their behavior.

I'll read what the OP posts but I won't click the link. I suggest everyone else do the same.

I insist on everybody knowing just how outrageous this one is. The desperation by this writer, and his shameless tactic to drag the name of Archbishop Desmond Tutu into his scrap against John Calipari. Seriously, when he wakes up from his drunk he should jump into the St. Charles.
.

"The Globe's not invited,'' UMass publicist Bill Strickland said 20 years ago. "He did not want the Boston Globe in his home . . . I think he should be entitled to invite anyone he wants to his house. And to keep anyone out.''

Fair enough. But I found it amazing that Burris - a man worthy of marrying the daughter of Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu - was not allowed in the home of a man who prevailed over a program that disgraced Massachusetts. It was like getting scolded for cheating by Alex Rodriguez.

Considering the author has a poorer grasp of the definition of "irony" than does Alanis Morissette, I struggle to give him much credibility as a writer. Seems the Globe is just another former newspaper turned in to a blog in an effort to save money. I wouldn't invite them into my home either. Better to save room for actual journalists rather than waste it inviting everyone with a tumblr account.

Yeah, I think Celtics and Red Sox fans consider Shaughnessy to be their Tipton. But you know a Boston sportswriter that is loved and respected? Bob Ryan. Wanna know what he thinks of Cal? See this interview last year, with Mike Decourcy of The Sporting News, when Ryan published his last book.

SN: Your acknowledgements mentioned John Calipari. I wondered what compelled you to include him.[/B]
Ryan:[/B] Two reasons: While he was at UMass, he could not have been more accessible. Media-friendly, me-friendly. One time he was at the A-10 Tournament in Philadelphia, and he allowed me to sit in their meetings, gave me a run-down on every player, gave me a story nobody else had. He was always great to me.
Secondly, when my son died, and a lot of people stepped to the plate everywhere. But certain people really went out of their way and stayed in touch afterward. Calipari is one of them. I excuse myself from all Coach Cal discussions. I call him a charming rogue. I'm very fond of John.
This is similar to other stories about Calipari being a friend at a time of loss (Huggins was another). You won't hear these stories circulated by media, you should remember them. The picture they give of Cal is more accurate than what the Shaughnessies and Fordes would have you believe....

You read articles like that and realize - Matt Jones won. He and his blogger ilk have effectively dragged the rest of the sports media down to their level. In this case, that "article" is no better than a long-winded message board post. Full of falsities, blinding bias, and reeking of troll.

Are you serious? Jesus, that is a ridiculously long stretch in order to find an excuse to rag on Matt Jones.

If you think sports "journalists" didn't write absurd garbage like this prior to 6 yrs ago then I'd have to imagine that you simply didn't read newspapers prior to now or you are incredibly young.

Billy Reed made it a practice to write this type of vile crap back 30+ yrs ago. The only difference between now and then is that those awful, awful bloggers have the ability to call out agenda driven douchebags who write this junk.

Why some of these articles get linked on this site to give them more hits is beyond me. Maybe this fan base will learn.

The OP is probably the one who wrote it

Like him or not, comparing Matt Jones to this Shaughnessy piece of **** is completely irresponsible at BEST.

Thank you #BBN for calling out this piece of crap hack hater. I love how this forum, as much as any place on the net for sports, gives our program a voice to combat the vile garbage that some in the media spew from time to time.

Like Cal has stated, if some in the media choose to try and disparage UK, our coaches or fans, #BBN will come after you, hold you accountable and even embarrass you for your ignorance.

Matt Jones is an advocate, not a hater. Nice try though.
