The case for CCC to return next season

Here are some of my expectations for CCC to return for one more season:
  1. Decent finish to this season
  2. Return all players except for Nance (he’ll have a professional career of some sort)
  3. Revised contract with smaller buyout
  4. PBS or another coach added to the staff (assuming he’s let go by Milwaukee)
  5. Added bonus: PBJ transfers to NU to stick with dad and develop for one more season in the B1G

The adding PBS would seem to have the ability to have the biggest impact. We have not been the same since he left

The one saving grace I saw by the end of last season is that there was no indication he had lost the players. Which I thought was a small miracle.

There's no evidence of that this year either. At least not yet. Though it's clear I am not a fan of CC, I have stayed away from voicing any opinion on him being potentially fired. One thing that will put me over the line is seeing signs he has lost the players.

I am not sure where does could come from anyway, it's not like our pressers are anything challenging that could lead to a Malik Williams situation:

I thought about this over the weekend and the one thing Collins needs to do, assuming he gets another year, is to get a stud transfer PG. That is the one thing I believe could get this group over the hump and to the tourney. It's why Buie does so well when Greer's on the court; Buie's better as a SG.

Losing Brumbaugh was devastating, but the transfer market could deliver at least a one year make-up at a time when we are competitive.

Nance may play in Europe or something but I don't see him in the NBA. Has he every taken over a game or shown himself to be a force to be recorded with against lesser opponents? Not that I have seen. Maybe if he develops for a few more years.

Don’t we say that every offseason - that we need to land a true PG, a la McIntosh? If we (usually) can land a quality QB every year for the football team, why can’t we land a quality PG most years?

Nance has the raw ability and pedigree to get a shot at the G League, and certainly overseas in Europe. I never said he was a NBA player, although his older brother ended up at a small college and has had a nice NBA career since developing there.

This brings up another reason for keeping CCC… how do we know firing him won’t lead to a mass exodus?

We’ll still have enough talent next year to make a run assuming everyone else returns. This team plays hard for CCC, and if we can him Buie / Young / the rest could decide to finish their careers elsewhere.

Agree with all the posts above. One more year since apart from Nance we will have the core back.y

And I think the fact that he has not lost the team says they still want to play for him and play here.

Nance is not an NBA player. He is a good shooter for a guy his height, but thats about it.

I'm not sure if the team has checked out on the season or not - the last two efforts have been "not very good" against Purdue and "bad" against Minnesota.

Hopefully we turn it around tonight or we're spiraling the wrong way.

That's the relevance of tonight's game. And maybe not potentially ending 2nd to last in the league.

If replacing a coach was a 100% basketball decision, CC should be gone. As it is not, it is also a business decision considering the sums involved, etc, I admit it can make sense to retain him. And that I am not equipped to know everything that is in play. Gragg is paid handsomely to figure that out.

But if he has lost this team, I don't see how the parties involved do not come to some agreement that it's time to move on.

I'm with @GatoLouco. I think the decision will have more to do with things other than basketball. If Collins is retained, I think it will be because NU doesn't want to pay his buyout and Gragg doesn't want to ask donors for buyout money when he's already asking them to pay for Ryan Field. He may feel like the Ryan Field renovation is enough on his plate for now.

What NU hoops needs is its Ryan Hilinski and Hunter Johnson, or its Jason Whittaker and Aidan Smith!

NU’s PG hit rate — 2 good ones in ten years — is waaaaay better than its QB hit rate.

What? Recency bias much?

We had McIntosh for four years. A few years before that we had Juice. And years before that we had Jitim / TJ Parker.

In QB play: we’ve had Ramsey, Thorson, Siemian, Colter, Persa, Kafka, Bacher, Basanez, Kustok, and the Rose Bowl QB nearly in succession with few down years.

Don’t let 2019 & 2021 skew your view.

Our last good QB recruit was Thorson. Since then, there have been two good PG recruits. The relative timespan here is CCC’s tenure. Thorson committed, no joke, two weeks before CCC was announced.

So, technically, there have been zero good quarterbacks recruited during the CCC era at NU.

NU does not “usually” land a good quarterback, though NU once did. (Aside: Can you believe that, in the past decade, NU actually had *backup* quarterbacks capable of winning games?)

You mean the below average talent that the CCC apologists claim is the only cause (other than admissions - willy) for our crappiness? Ok, clean house and start over.

Don’t ignore the adverb ‘usually’!

We’ve had a starting QB on our roster that could help us win in every season for years, up until 2019 & 2021.

Heck, we used to have pretty good backups too. I saw Alviti come off the bench to clinch the game in Nashville…

Reasonable. Seems that other than against MN, the players continue to play hard

Buie was diving on the floor for loose balls in the post up 10 with a minute to go. This team laid an egg in Minnesota but is still scrapping for victories.

Contrast that with our defense’s lack of desire to tackle last season… and it really is eye opening.

I remain cautiously optimistic for our best performance in the BTT yet. Yes, that’s right @HawkCat : you heard it here first.

8. Pat Ryan launches an NIL program that pays all bball players 500k a year
9. I buy my daughter a unicorn that ***** golden coins.;

The only item on your list that might happen is #2.

Let me know when you get that Unicorn so that I can campaign for its immediate promotion to Head Coach of Mens Basketball at NU.
