The CCC decision

I think one very telling sign will be what CCC does next. If Nance is ready next game, does CCC keep playing him heavy in the 5 w Young as a backup in an uptempo style or put Nance at the 4 and slow it all down.

If no nance for awhile (and Williams probably misses at least one more) then CCC has more data and easy choice.

But let’s assume nance gets back next game. If CCC does not at least try to keep slow pace, start young and use nance mostly as a four, then he really needs to go. I’m not saying they will win or even do well. But we have lots of data of how high pace tempo w nance at five does. So intentionally, stubbornly, refusing to keep trying something that worked once would demonstrate more stubbornness than PF - and that’s a high bar and also a guy that should be on the hot seat as a result.

I would love to see CCC keep trying this new approach, pile up some wins and put some real interest in the B1G tourney. Beat MSU means every game is winnable. Do this and my faith in CCC is restored even if it came to pass from a forced decision resulting from an injury.

He will go back to his usual 5. RY will play more as there’s no Williams. Rotation will seem a bit less funky as there’s no 4th guy rotating in the frontcourt.

On paper we are not more than 1 win off pace for the season we should be having. Splitting MD and MSU was for sure believed as a positive prior to the season. They just happened in reverse of home/away and MD was supposed to be a top 4 team. The game we are off is the PSU game in Evanston.

CC knows this, 1-4 looked bad, but really close to being on track now. So he’ll keep his delusions about Beran.

Wow, there's a thread about NU basketball and its just you two guys, making the usual insightful comments! I guess I get to ruin it.

I will be shocked if Collins doesn't revert right back to what he was doing before, overplaying Beran, playing Beran with Nance, substituting like a madman, parking Nicholson and Young back on the bench, using Young mainly with freshmen and backups.

The sad truth is that the Nance/Young combination has not been effective so far this year. Its like we don't practice it and don't design anything for it on offense. The guards don't know what to do to take advantage of it. (hint to CCC, Young down low, Nance up top)

I didn't post this after the Maryland debacle, but in that game CCC shattered his personal record with 18 different substitutions in the first half. That means each lineup averaged ONE MINUTE of playing time before he changed it again. You simply cannot do that and expect good results. Its a pretty strong indication that you have no idea what you are doing (or why). Guys need more than one possession to figure out how to work together on both ends of the floor. When you deliberately deprive your players of a chance to read the opponent and how to defeat them, its just...... bad.

I’m going to guess nance won’t be ready next game and Williams has to be out at least another game. If things remain positive, CCC would have to be an idiot to revert. But I also bet this same lineup spits the bit after an opponent can now plan for it leaving us left scratching our heads on the future.

I believe the odds are good that more players will miss games due to covid. Young, Beran, and Nance are likely to be in that group. That may dictate what CC does more than anything.
