Mark Stoops and the Kentucky fan base have had a relationship more characterized by emotional swings, from love to anger, than almost any I can remember between a coach and a fan base in sports. He's bought himself patience and optimism time and again, even when times have been tough. One reason is because he's won the 24 hours news cycle, just as John Calipari so often does. But they've done it very different ways.

Great article. My favorite was the "vilified on Monday, vindicated on Tuesday....." The Kentucky fan base is ridiculous at times.....some would call it a microwave.

I believe that Stoops offers UK the best chance of success... consistent success... than any coach UK has had in my time as a fan 1964-present.
He continues to recruit well in spite of of a tepid won/loss record... He seems to have some measure of loyalty among his staff... Yes I know money talks..... If he gets over the hump (6 wins), I think he's lit the fuse to better times...

There wouldn't have been anger to any degree with any 2015 win between V, FL & LV - all there for the taking. Those loses allowed people to vent. What's saving him from worse opinions is Marrow's recruiting & the hiring of Gran/Hinshaw. They allow people to believe there's daylight ahead.

I just don't believe this "so far"...he may turn our to be great, but he runs a very disorganized ship on the field...I will be at ALL games this fall, but I've gone all Missouri with Stoops

Everybody can cry microwave, depth, and whatever other excuses you can dream up but the real reason Stoops and some of the fan base is at odds is all the talk and no action. Flashback to the day Mark Stoops was hired. I don't think anyone reasonably thought we would be lighting in the bottle but Stoops did talk UK competing in the SEC East. He brought that upon himself. All that talk and then UK goes out and loses in the opener to WKU. I'm not faulting Mark Stoops for that but all that talk and then the same old UK product. That's not the best way to start a relationship. Flash forward 3 years later, has anything really changed? Still a lot of talk (coach better, execute better, be tougher) and still pretty much the same product. UK beat 2 mediocre SEC teams in back to back years (USC/Vandy & USC/Mizz) We still wiffed at some golden opportunities with Florida 2 years in a row and 0-2 against UL. That never helps to be winless against your rival and to actually look worse a year later at home than you did on the road.

Stoops pretty much has one last chance with Gran. We're essentially spinning our wheels as a program. We go into year 4 with more questions than answers. Questions at the QB position again for the 4th straight year. Questions about organization on the field and questions about coaching. Sure we're recruiting well but are we developing and are we that much of a better program than we were when Stoops was hired? It doesn't look like but our coach talks like we are. Again, little less talk and a lot more action.

Yes, I agree. It would be so much better to say our qb is inaccurate. the offensive line is weak, what do we expect when our nose tackle is very fat and, oh yes, the receivers what can you say good about them. By the way there is constant bickering and bitching in the locker room.

We have any number of guys on the board who would do that and a fine job it would be.

I have some deep concerns about what I saw on the field this past season. That said, the moves Stoops has made during the off-season thus far have gone a long way toward winning me back over. The guy has made some superb hires and it seems like the coaching staff has redoubled their effort on the recruiting trail. Yes, some of the previous season's in-game coaching decisions left me baffled at times. Stoops often looked like a complete and total rookie out there. But the decisions he has made this off-season seem like moves you would expect a successful, veteran coach to make. That tells me that Mark Stoops is far from being incompetent.

I am hopeful that the majority of the problems last season were a result of the divisiveness that Dawson created. Get everyone on the same page and get the moral of the group built back up to where it needs to be and hopefully things will improve. And maybe with another year of experience under his belt, hopefully Stoops grows a bit as a coach also. There is certainly a learning curve for any new head coach. I really hope Stoops can pull it all together and right this ship. I truly believe he is the best chance we have to succeed as an SEC football program because he is one of those rare coaches that can actually recruit at a high level at a school like UK. Should he fail, most likely whoever the new coach ends up being, we will go back to having to depend on 2 star and a few 3 star recruits again. You can only coach up sub par talent so much.
