Is an abomination of a venue for college basketball. I’m amazed we shot so well in that godforsaken place, which has the feel of a Moldovan zinc mine. It’s only fitting that the desperate final heave from the Gamecocks hit that light fixture and careened into the corner.

Good riddance to that tired, industrial-grade chow hall.

I can't count the number of high arcing threes that seemed to juuuusssst miss the ceiling. I honestly wonder if the funkiness of the venue contributed to Nick's struggles, especially against UVA.

Perhaps the coaches and team will agree with your view and that will be the end of the Greenbrier. But from this fan’s point of view it was a fantastic setting. No bad seats. Seven tiers on our side and eight or nine on the other, basically a small high school gym - you could hear the players talk to one another. A picnic atmosphere, a cordial, friendly crowd, and with the long commercial time outs and no bands, there was plenty of time to “get to know the neighbors.” Everyone in our section seemed be enjoying themselves. As for the setting, that corner of W. Va. is one of the most beautiful places on the east coast, and the staff was competent and welcoming. I’m buying on day one if the Cat’s play there again.

One thought about the UVA game - the one I attended. It showed that this team is so deep that NM can have an off night and there is plenty of firepower to compensate. The team can even make up for lopsided free throw counts. But the one thing that made the difference was the rebounding imbalance. UVa was was simply bigger, virtually across the board, both in height and breadth. About six minutes into game they figured out that crashing the offensive glass was their meal ticket.

For your sake, hope we don’t accept an invitation to play on an Aircraft Carrier!

I actually liked the venue. We moved down to court side for the second half which was a very cool experience.

For the past couple seasons it seems like the cats have played in these weird no name tournaments up until this year I’d never heard of the Greenbrier last year against Butler with a bunch of other no name schools you would think coming off of 2 ncaa tournament appearances that we’d get better draws for tournaments I guess we still don’t get respected.

Nick must have figured it out when he got to the South Carolina game.

I suspect that Nick‘s pregame routine was thrown off because instead of his usual pepperoni pizza, the waiter in the ballroom told him he could have either chicken or beef.

You must not play golf! The Greenbrier is a fabulous resort hotel. and it attracted 4 excellent teams to the tournament

The Greenbrier is an amazing place. In fact, it's where Congress decided to spend its time if the country got nuked. It has amazing history, class, charm and golf. Sam Snead played here often. I've played all of the courses, used the pool, lost money at the casino, ate fabulous meals. It is truly world class. It's where rich people took their family to vacation. It may not be a great basketball venue, but a great vacation, golf getaway. Direct service from O'hare to Greenbrier. It has a huge runway to accomodate Congress in emergencies.

I am really surprised that NU patrons did not enjoy The Greenbrier. It is a spectacular resort with great amenities. The Old White course has template holes from an earlier era of golf course architecture, including a Biarritz-2 putting segments separated by a deep traversing depression.
Afternoon tea feels like you may bump into the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts of times gone by.
I hope some NU fans took the overnight train from Chicago to White Sulphur Springs

I’m a big rail fan and that would be cool if fans rode the train to the resort. The resort and other amenities like the golf course make it sound kike a great tourist destination. For fans attending the game it sounds like a good experience staying at the resort. But on tv ithe converted ballroom looked like a funky venue to play a basketball game. At least the game was indoors and not ot the deck of an aircraft carrier.

I’m a fan of the Grand Hotel in Mackinac, Breton Woods, the Broadmoor, the Hotel Gellert, and the Chateau Lake Louise, but I don’t want to watch the Cats playing basketball in the dining room!!!!

A few items on the Greenbrier. Jim Justice, current Senator and former governor from WV owns it. Coal magnate who's fortune is less these days but he manages. Republican stalwart. He invested a ton in the place including new convention facilities, I believe, quite a few years ago now. Haven't seen the place for decades but I assume that is where the games are played.

Playing in ballrooms is nothing new. Probably the best known tournament is at Baha Mar in the Bahamas. Whether a facility is any good depends obviously on how it was designed. I built many ballrooms and generally they aren't really high enough but might sorta do with the occasional ball hitting the ceiling. I did build a ballroom once at a resort in Florida which was intended more as a combined ballroom/exhibition center. High ceilings there. Serious exhibition facilities like McCormick have tall ceilings and big span areas.

I mean, Virginia and Butler are both pretty notable programs plus a regional SEC school. Not a bad tournament at all. Quirkey/weird/cool venue.

I mean, yes Virginia and Butler are name programs, but Butler hasn’t really been good for a while now and Virginia kind of cooled off, especially after Bennett left. Sorry not trying to be a negative Nancy but if you scroll around to a lot of these Thanksgiving week tournaments a lot of these schools some in the Big Ten that have not had success or rarely make the tournament are playing teams who are regularly in March madness.
