The impact of Kopp last night

So Kopp only scored 5 points last night, but he was +13 in a game we won by 14 while only playing 27 minutes. All 8 other players played at least 4 minutes with and without Kopp on the floor last night. Here's how everyone did with and without Kopp on the floor:

PlayerKopp onKopp off
Nance+6 (23 mins)0 (6 mins)
Beran+6 (20 mins)-2 (12 mins)
Audige+5 (19 mins)-3 (6 mins)
Buie+12 (14 mins)+1 (10 mins)
Gaines+7 (7 mins)-2 (5 mins)
Young+7 (4 mins)+1 (6 mins)
Greer+1 (13 mins)+3 (8 mins)
Berry+8 (9 mins)+7 (11 mins)

It's pretty clear that even though Kopp wasn't scoring last night, his presence on the court made a huge impact on our offensive game as MSU had to always account for him. When Kopp sat, MSU could clamp down better on our team, with the exception of Berry, who was excellent last night.

Great insights! Keep them coming!

Cappy, you have used a stat in the past that shows if players over performed their expected +/-. Was Kopp the leader in that metric for the MSU game? Given your analysis above, I am guessing that he was.

No, I pulled out the numbers for Kopp because he had such a positive impact without scoring so I wanted to see what drove that. Berry was the leader in +/- over expectation, he was +15 while playing only 20 minutes, so he was +8 over expectation. Berry was in the game during part of the second half run that put us up by 21, but was then taken out before MSU closed it to 12, and then obviously he hit some big shots throughout the game. Beran was the worst at -7, as the 'Cats were +10 in the 8 minutes he sat on the bench, though I felt like he played a positive game overall.

BOO BERRY combination is something we have not seen in a while. 3 solid BIG guards and Greer works really hard for depth. We lost a couple of highly regarded guards who signed but did not end up enrolling. The wait may be over and the guard play will make the Cats competitive. Now this is a different take than after the Pitt game but we know the highs and lows.

And throw in 6-6 Brooks Barnhizer next year into the guard rotation and that's going to be fun to watch.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Berry on the defensive end. I didn’t know what we were getting, but figured that a true freshman known mostly for being a scorer would struggle. He hasn’t been perfect, but he has impressed me on some defensive possessions. He understands defensive positioning very well and puts himself in a favorable spot against his man on almost all on ball possessions. Gotta think his minutes will be going up.

Granted, they are playing fewer games than normal this season. But a true FY will eventually wear down, and hopefully Collins will take care not to burn him out. Fewer quality minutes are better than losing his legs and affecting his shot and his confidence.

Greer has been a pleasant surprise. Very happy for him to be contributing. He really took one for the team coming to NU early and foregoing a year of prep school.
