Scorsese’s The Irishman dropped today on Netflix with De Niro, Pesci, Pacino, and Keitel. It’s 3 1/2 hours long and a masterpiece! Incredible film making.

i just talked to my daughter who told me she quit with 30 minutes left. She really enjoyed it. She just said that’s too long at one sitting. I’ll probably stop after two hours and come back later

Yeah it's great film making and the acting is good, but I found it underwhelming for all the hype.

The good:
  • About as deep of an ensemble cast as you can get. Probably the last time you'll see this group together again.
  • Big budget, the historical accuracy of the whole presentation was impressive.
  • Enjoyed the based on a true story aspect of the mob/teamsters.
The not as good:
  • Didn't see the value in it being 3.5 hours. It really dragged as times.
  • There was no obvious climax to the movie. And while it was still entertaining there was very little drama or suspense overall.
  • No overly redeeming value in any character. Nobody to pull for or even have much empathy for.
  • It was very distracting to me having the main characters "de-aged". Apparently this was mostly done via digital technology. Having De Niro play a character 40 something years younger than he is in life looked really odd to me. Pacino's de-aging came off a little better. It would have worked better to have a younger actor as it's easier to add age than de-age.
Final Takeaway: I'm sure I'll watch it again some time and may find greater like for it. When you set out to make an epic movie it doesn't always turn out that way. If you like the genre it's a must watch but doesn't approach an all timer as some are stating.

There were a few scenes that were really bad. One in particular was a scene where a “young” deniro beats up a grocery store owner. It looked like a spoof scene it was so horribly executed.

Watched it Thursday night. Overall thought it was a good movie. Agree not up to Goodfellows / Goddfather level. Honestly at this point I just feel like I'm watching the tenth version of the same move.

Didn’t finish it and don’t plan to do so. It just wasn’t all that interesting. Watching two hours and called it quits.

It was just okay. A bit long and I felt like I've seen that movie already multiple times in Casino and Goodfellas.

It was also quite distracting that all the characters were 70 years old in 1950 and never aged for 25 years. I know there's only so much you can do when all your actors are 75 in real life but maybe its time to expand your talent pool.
