The Late Interception

Haven't had the chance to compare the plays because I'm still in Miami, but was Drew's late pick on the same play as the near pick 6 against Oregon? Similar area on field, trying to hit a covered receiver running right to left, about 15-20 yards down field...

I remember hearing one time that after each season Joe Montana would review all of his interceptions and they would take any plays that led to more than one interception out of the playbook.

For whatever reason, they seem to not play replays much on broadcasts anymore so I only saw it live and then on one replay, I think. But from memory, he was looking only at Warren and when he was covered, panicked and said, “WTF, I’ll just fling it over this way and hope for the best.” The Oregon throw seemed like it was the designed throw to be made.

Unfortunately, he was hit when he threw it and that caused the ball to have more loft allowing for the interception. A sack there wouldn’t have been a bad thing, just get it to OT. The Oregon throw was a sideline fade but he didn’t throw it far enough towards OOB thus the interception. And upon a second agonizing view, the pass near the goaline to Nick should have been caught by Nick. Not a perfect pass but it hit Nick in the hands and he dropped it.

I think he's referring to the Oregon pick that they took back to the 5 yard line earlier in the game and not the one with 2:00 left in the 4th quarter.

Also, you have to take into account the momentum that Singleton has going towards the goal line with the way his body is turned and where that ball was thrown. Maybe he should have been able to gather it but then if he does, does he fall down or get tackled because of having to change direction? A good QB easily puts that on Singleton's hands in stride for a walk-in TD.

As a guy who caught many passes when I was young, be it 50 years ago, if your momentum is carrying you one way and you have to reach back and down for the ball, it’s very difficult to catch the ball and keep your feet. Now these guys are head and shoulders better than I and they practice that stuff, but I’d say that’s a 50-50 catch at best. If Nick wants to be 100% sure he catches it, he probably ruins his chance to score by falling down, sliding or a defender catching up. Could he have caught it, sure! Drew made it difficult by throwing it a little low, a little hard and a bit behind Nick. Just another “missed” opportunity.

The pass was low below his waist and behind him!

You might want to blame Ioane as much as Allar on that last throw. He completely whiffed on his block. His man blew up the play and eventually hit Drew as he threw. An end zone look at that play showed that no one was open. I believe Allar was still between the tackles so he couldn't just heave the ball in the stands. That being said, other than fumbling, he did the worst possible thing he could do in that situation.
