i know i have gone back and forth with some people here on the board but i hope everyone out there is safe and healthy.

we should be here talking about the elite 8 and instead some people are battling life and death.

to change the subject - outside of the tournament year:
1) what is NU most successful year
2) what was your favorite year?

well no one chimed in so ill start.

1) i thought the most successful year was 2011 with the 3rd round NIT game. it just had the feeling that NU was turning the corner.

2) 2012 - "shurna watch" for becoming the all-time leading scorer was a lot of fun

The most fun I had was the 08-09 season.

Lots of fun games that season, and NU broke into the top 25 for one week in December, but lost the conference opener.

Shurna hit a game-winning buzzer beater against Purdue (Ohio State?).

There was also that amazing collapse against Illinois , where juice couldn’t single handedly break the press for the final three minutes. And the finale was at OSU, where the bus driver was an hour late because he didn’t spring ahead...

As I recall, the conference tournament ended with a whimper against Minnesota.

Sad but very Northwestern that my distinct memories are of two losses and one win...and my fuzzy memories are of two more losses...

'93-'94 was a memorable year. Ricky's team starts 9-0, loses to Big Dog Robinson of Purdue at the buzzer, then goes 0-9 with a walk on the wildside by Byrdsong at Minnesota. Then, they win 5 of last 9 (when above .500 record was almost an automatic into the NIT) including a pulsating regular season finale, an OT home win over Michigan with Fab Four minus Webber, and then score a home NIT win vs. Kleinschmidt and DePaul, followed by a heartbreaking home OT loss to Xavier in the second round. I remember long lines to get those NIT tickets so a lot of buzz going on.

My favorite year was 1982-83. I was in grad school at NU, done with classes, so had free time to attend a bunch of games at DePaul. Highlight was beating Michigan and MSU in successive games at Alumni Hall. That was a very good team, Stack/Jenkins/Rathel/Goode/Aaron that beat Notre Dame on St. Paddys day in the NIT. Great ride.

It was OSU, not Purdue. Carmody's only win over OSU in 13 years (1-22).

The problem for that team, IIRC, is that they had no appreciable bench after Paul Schultz. Am I remembering correctly?

Sadly, you are.

The starters averaged 35.8, 34.2, 33.4, 36.4 and 35.7 minutes per game. Schultz averaged 13.4. That was just about it. Amazingly, those 6 players appeared in all 30 games that season. Somehow NU avoided the dreaded NU-injury curse.

I was never a Northwestern fan until McIntosh went there. So for me it was the 16-17 season. That weekend in Salt Lake City was an amazing time.

That was my sophomore year, and I agree. The starting lineup that year was really strong, and the old DePaul gym was fun--kind of the opposite of our most recently borrowed venue.

That was one of my favorite seasons too. I really enjoyed that team. I remember beating ND in the NIT too, and then barely losing to DePaul in the next round.

Yep, on a last second near half court shot. Had friends from DePaul and they couldn't believe the large number of NU fans at their game and were wowed by NUMB!

I can't remember. Did NUMB march at halftime?
No but they just about filled an entire section behind one basket. Question, what was the name of that kid from Iowa, who's dad used to tailgate with us? Hope you are all doing well. This staying at home is tough without sports on TV. Especially the Cubs!

Anyone remember the Cub rain delays in the 70's and early 80's?

Lou Boudreau was a Cubs announcer and so during long delays they played a documentary of the Cleveland Indians World Series team for which Lou was a player-coach. Early or mid 50's team.

The same documentary.

Over.

And Over.

And over.

For, like, 15 years.

At the time, there was a dearth of Cubs World Series documentaries.

Tourney year aside, these are also my picks.

(Obviously the most successful years were 1931-33 but I'm pretty sure nobody here was around for those)

Don't think Boudreau was the lead announcer. Was the "color guy" for Brickhouse? Lloyd? Really knew his baseball but otherwise kind of dull. Sounds about right for a rainy day afternoon or a baseball shutdown.

He did color....the color guys back then would do a few innings on radio and a few innings on television. I loved Brickhouse....thought he was vastly superior to Harry Caray.

Boudreau was Denny McClain's father in law.

Ah, the voices of summer . . . Jack Brickhouse, Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau on the car radio. I know I'm not the only one here who fondly remembers those voices. :)

The 2010 team with Juice, Shurna and Crawford was my personal favorite. That team lost on a buzzer beater to #1 Ohio State (I was at the game and devastated) and then lost in OT to Ohio State in the Big 10 Tournament. They lost a few heartbreakers that year otherwise I think that team would have broken through. I think they had 8 conference wins.

That was the 2011 team.
