To your last statement, yes people have said that the past couple of years, but the games vs other P5 schools didn’t support that, especially vs ranked teams.
This year though the entire league (except SC) is rolling through the P5. 14-2 in ACC challenge, and did I hear we were 12-1 vs ACC before the challenge. Wins over KU, Houston and others. I bet we are winning at least 2/3 of our P5 games as a league. Out of 16 teams, the 2nd worst record is 7-2. 12 of 16 teams have 0-1 losses. And we are playing good teams. I just looked at an undefeated OKL team that isn’t getting talked about thinking maybe it’s been all cupcakes. Nope… they’ve beaten Providence, UL and ranked Arizona.
I do think the SEC overall has looked ridiculously strong compared to the other conferences, but there may still be some questions about just how deep the league will be.
For example, Oklahoma really hasn't beaten a good team...AZ was ranked at the time, but they have lost to every power conference team they've played, and OK's win against UL was the game that UL's Pryor went down early with the injury, and the Cards haven't been good since then.
I think they are strong, but TN's best win is a thrashing of Baylor. Baylor is solid, but they've been blown out a couple of times by the better teams they've played.
I wonder if a couple of the other SEC teams may be in the same category?
Again, not saying the league isn't very strong or the best league overall b/c I think up till now, there is little argument that they are the best league. The SEC has beaten many the best teams from every other league except the Big Ten. For example, Bama's losses are to Big Ten teams (Oregon, Purdue), Ole Miss lost to Purdue, Ark lost to Illinois, aTm lost to Oregon.
That isn't to say the Big Ten is better than the SEC overall (I don't think it's close b/c the SECIf the top Big Ten teams can beat up on the mid-lower SEC teams, the top SEC teams may be able to do the same...at least at home. We all know SEC teams like to play WELL ABOVE themselves when the Cats roll into town.
