There's only 11 minutes of actual football being played in an NFL game?

Sounds crazy but I believe it considering how many damn commercials and time in between plays. But WSJ and many studies have shown there's only 11-12 minutes of actual play on the field during an NFL broadcast.

On top of that sometimes, portions of the 11 minutes of action is preempted in favor of interviewing some jackass general manager about their team's good community works and deeds.

Should just keep a running clock for everything but timeouts called. Maybe allow clock stoppage during the last 2 minutes of each half. The amount of game action won't change a lot I don't think, but it will speed up the overall game with no stoppage for incomplete passes or going out of bounds for about 85% of the game. They could lower the play clock to increase possessions if need be.

I remember watching a game (several, I suppose) where they cut to a commercial after a touchdown and extra point. Come back for the kickoff, got a touchback, went back to a commercial.

Zzzzz

And do you really need 40 seconds between plays?

Look, I played football from 3rd grade through freshman year of college. Rugby and lacrosse (even soccer, IMO) are more entertaining, when understood. My wife won't sign off on football, so my sons will be raised on soccer, lacrosse, and perhaps in time, some rugby. Problem solved. Fluid play.

Game has about 120 or so plays - 5 seconds a play would be 600 sec or 10 min so seems about right.

Unless I feel like I need to watch it live (UK games), I'll dvr most NFL games and use the skip forward feature right as the ball is down and it usually can sync up to right before the next play happens. Not always, but it's definitely a nice tool to use. You can get through games real quick like that.

Not to mention - OK, I'll mention - the loud noise being blasted between plays. They even keep it going tell the ball is about to be caught after KO's.

Which is why Soccer and UFC are rocketing in popularity.

Soccer, even though there may be 2 points scored the entire match, is 90 minutes of constant activity. They keep the clock running, and stoppage of play to a very minimum.

UFC is similar in that it is action packed without a whole lot of interruption, and some times it can be over earlier than expected with KOs. People can be entertained and not have to waste and entire day/weekend around the event.

NFL is going to eventually see some ratings issues outside of a wild political cycle. The way the game is currently constructed from top to bottom just doesn't suit the modern millennial entertainment/consumption pallet.

We now live in a world where everyone 30 and younger is used to things happening quickly and efficiently in nearly every aspect of society.

A real "microwave society".

NFL and NCAAF are really going to have evolve to meet the millennial expectations. College games have gotten particularly out of hand in terms of length.

No body 30 and younger wants to spend 3-3.5hrs waiting around for an outcome. Younger generations are losing interest in football not because it's brutal (see rise in UFC) people naturally like combative competition, and that will never change. What people don't like is violence that doesn't conveniently fit their schedule.

OK. If a play lasts no more than 6 seconds on average and the total plays are around 150 (75 per team) then that would be 900 seconds which is 15 minutes.

NFL gets worse and worse each year. I used to consider myself a die hard Bengals fan but couldn't care less anymore, and not just about them but the league in general. I probably haven't sat down and watched 20 minutes total of an NFL game this year. It's just boring football in my opinion. Everything looks exactly the same. I love college football but the NFL just sucks these days.

How are people surprised by this???

FB is a helluva lot more entertaining than soccer or lacrosse. Go to a HS or college game for these 3 and see which one has a larger crowd. They are gaining in popularity, they have nowhere to go but up.

I'm done with the NFL. Haven't watched a minute all year...and in years past wouldn't miss a Sunday afternoon watching games.

As far as time of actual playing, number of commercials, number of reviews, etc...college football is close behind. So the same complaints apply to college as with pros. Except, in college, there is deeper commitment (IMO) of the fans to their team. Being an alum, it's the in-state school, Dad went to school there, and so forth. But even that has it's limits if the number of commercials, etc. continue to grow.

As far as soccer, maybe 90 minutes of action, but to me boring action. Cross country has a lot of running around and I don't watch that either.

I would normally agree about the soccer comment but I went to England for a Manchester United match and that atmosphere was bigger than any football game I have ever been to and that includes a national championship and the Rose Bowl.

But in my opinion, the NBA is the most boring sport on the planet and my interest in the NFL is gone for a number of reasons. 1. Too long and boring 2. Sick of the scumbags and criminals with constant domestic violence or drug issues as well as just total egomaniacs. 3. The social issues like kneeling for the anthem and denying the Dallas Police stickers on the Cowboys helmets.

The hell with them.

To be fair, what other sports in England are big time fan spectacles? I doubt they have near as many options for fans to support like we do here. There probably isn't another country in the world that has as many fans as we do that go to sports including baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer. So when soccer is pretty much the only big time sport in your country, of course it will have a huge following.
