I just did this week, finally

Been a member for awhile now, as has my wife and our kids and their spouses. I highly recommend Dr. Carver's shave butter as well if you haven't tried it, and the One Wipe Charlies are pretty sweet too.

Guacamole

Guacamole is expensive because avocados are expensive. And they are expensive because they are only grown in a small region. They are getting more expensive in recent weeks because of a shortage due to some disease affecting crop yields.

Our tree in the back yard produces hundreds of them a year. My wife uses all she can and we give the rest away

Another one.........flower seeds. $1.09 for a pack of about 15-20 marigold seeds? That's basically the amount that is on one seed head or flower bud. I plant them all over my beds, and harvest and dry them every fall and plant them the next spring. Based on the retail price, I harvest easily $500 of seeds a year, since I easily save at least 500 heads a year

If it's GMO marigolds, you could be sued by the seed company for doing that.

Books that explain supply and demand, and how equilibrium is reached. Apparently.

Do all products follow supply and demand? It seems to me that many do not, but instead are artificially pricey just because gullible people will pay for them. Is that part of supply and demand theory?

I believe "just because gullible people will pay for them" = demand in most economic texts I have read. The market price is the market price.

Anyway, I have always been fascinated by things that have different prices, but require work and knowledge to obtain the better price.

Example of one of my favorite products Under Armour Golf Polos. They are fantastically comfortable because they are made out of material that is cool, reflects UV rays, and stretches in 4 directions instead of just 2 like almost every other golf shirt out on the market. Anyway the MSRP is $60-$70 on 1 shirt. Expensive right? Well I know that if i stop by TJ Maxx and Ross 2 or 3 times a month I can find 2 or 3 over the summer that I like for $25-$30. I also know in September Dillard's will have a clearance event and I can get them for 50% off of 50% off which works out to about $20. I also know both of these options will leave me with limited selection of super snazzy colors so I buy a couple of the shirts right at the beginning of summer at a 15% off tent sale at Golf Headquarters for about $55. All in my average expense for 5 or 6 new shirts that's I love is about $35. To me this is an efficient market that is clearing itself out and maximizing the profit all the way through the supply.

MY wife loves avocados and I remember last year as we drove thru the region of California that produces them and seeing the roadside stands selling them 10 for a $1. Now I am at Kroger paying $2 EACH!!!

Yes and yes.

Barriers to entry prevent markets from being competitive.

Inelastic demand ensures that consumers aren't price sensitive for some products.

Utility maximizing behavior is at the ultimate root of the answer, with a strong preference on convenience for most consumers.

Looks like you've got a viable business you need to exploit. Avacado prices are going up up up

Florida avocados aren't Hass Avocados.

Nearly every item of clothing over $50. Obviously some exceptions will apply, especially likely to be an exception if made in the USA.
