Have you tried changing it through your profile?

If not, click the circle link in the upper right (just to the left of the little mail icon).
Click on Settings.
You may then have to enter your password.
Click on Profile.
Here you can update your username.

It worked! (Sorry. I kept trying to regain access/start a new account with the name and it kept saying it was taken.)
