20-Megajoule Blaster Created in Japan

Was this in one of the Godzilla movies and I missed it?

Check out the article and see if you can comprehend what this thing is exactly.

Japan is on a (sushi) roll. Saw they recently engineered the fastest internet in the world - can download all of Netflix in under a minute.

Also listened to a fascinating podcast about Chinese infrastructure and how in even the poorest, most remote parts of the country there is sophisticated infrastructure. Also interesting to learn that nearly all of Chinese political leadership have backgrounds in engineering and they contrasted that with American politicians who are mostly lawyers.

Impressive indeed. The US Navy has (had?) an electromagnetic railgun. The issue is that it's so energy intensive, and was wrought with electrical issues and barrel deterioration problems.

I can't even imagine the hurdles to obtain permits to build any of this stuff in the USA. They all would be regulated into oblivion, killed and buried before ever breaking ground

You don’t think they have regulation in China and Japan? It’s less that and more a funding/political/mandate issue; we can do anything we set as a priority - see the Moon landing for certified proof. There is too much special interest and lobbyist money to derail (pun intended) these kinds of projects. China doesn't have that issue; they are not beholden to a the public beyond serving their needs - they do what they need to do for better or worse.

Exactly - want to site a dam that will flood a historic city of 500,000 people? Don’t sweat it - we’ll order all those peasants to haul *** a mile up the ridge line.

We might be able to get away with mandates like that during an all out war effort, but not short of that.

I didn't say a thing about permitting in either Japan or China. I'm talking about right here where permitting has been allowed to be a tool of the anti-everything activists. I speak from experience having watched a major agency bend to the political will of a very few

We have not done too much since going to the moon. Seriously, what great feats or projects have been accomplished in this country in recent decades? Not much. I was boating with family on the Chesapeake and through the canal that goes over to the Delaware this summer. I asked them if they thought we could even construct that canal in 2025. It’s basically a trench that hits 50 feet deep in the middle and nobody thought that we could do that from regulatory to technical abilities to cost.
