This whole Lane Kiffin soap opera demonstrates the wild west, no rules, no integrity, environment CFB has sunk to... If this doesn't demonstrate....

....the need for a "Commissioner" and a clear set of rules in Major CFB, I don't know what does. I was briefly watching one of the ESPN "talking head" shows and one asked the other (i.e., the "color guy" asked the supposed "expert"), "If Kiffin announces that he's leaving 'Ole Miss after the egg bowl, which we are pretty confident he is, does he coach 'Ole Miss in the Playoffs if they beat Miss State?". The questioner explained that he was asking, because it is likely 'Ole Miss' best shot to win in the playoffs, so was curious what his counterpart thought would happen.

The expert, to their credit, said that they felt that was impossible as Kiffin would be recruiting for his new team at the same time he was coaching 'Ole Miss in the Playoffs - a clear conflict of interest. Didn't see any way that 'Ole Miss could allow this even if it is their best shot at succeeding in the Playoffs if they make it. Major CFB has degraded into a cesspool..... zero ethics or integrity...... just a lawless cesspool with no control of a situation which continues to spiral further into disgracefulness and dysfunction. What exactly is this cesspool teaching young people?

That, not unlike big government, lawlessness and questionable ethics pay big time.

Personally, I'd have no problem with PSU doing the right thing and giving Terry Smith a shot to continue to do it the right way (and teach his players his admirable values). Never count the underdog out - I like the mentality that Smith took into that UNL game; he clearly reached his team and they came into the game with a purpose. Winning on the road against a pretty mediocre-to-bad MSU squad was impressive because it was on the road in a non-conducive environment for a team in PSU's position.... he overcame, but Terry really showed me something this past weekend. The MSU win made a post-season game a possibility, but Terry really had the team playing with a purpose in that UNL game..... he's clearly got his team's attention and he'd be a positive influence on these young adults unlike many of the scumbags that populate Major CFB coaching. The PSU hiring team should consider this IMHO as a proud PSU Grad.

If players can leave so can coaches and vise versa. There's no lesson being taught here other than maximize your worth.
Coaches could always do this and have...not sure what you think changed other than players now have rights

Major CFB has devolved into an uncontrolled cesspool of zero-ethics dysfunction (take a look at scUM cheating their way to the top). The fact that you think it's wonderful, doesn't surprise me in the least moron.

Just because you've always been a scumbag lover - doesn't equate to "it's always been like this" across the board loser.
@Tom McAndrew - what is the deal here with the allowance on personal attacks? Are there no rules at this point, and it’s fine to hurl ridiculous insults in every post?

It’s happening in thread after thread after thread. Just brutal. Is this just the new normal?

And this is why you hire a Terry Smith. I know it seems idealistic and naive, but maybe Penn State’s brand (and its superpower) is to reject all that college football has become and reinvest in and embrace its values and its history.

Wont matter. The courts have basically tied a commissioner's hands.

That's not true - the courts do not interfere with any Professional Leagues rules and structures. If all the participating Conferences and Schools all agree to the same structure and rules (including a Commissioners Office which among other things, enforces them), the courts would not interfere with the legal contracts that create it.

I don't like it at all, but in reality, how is it any different than the "real world"?

Every single one of us has changed jobs.
Every single one of us has prepared and interviewed for our next job while still employed by our current one.
Every single one of us has tried to prepare for our next job while giving notice at our current one.

While we can agree we don't really like it, im not really sure we are teaching bad lessons here.

And not a single one of us has ever worked in a Professional Sports League where many of these actions are specifically banned and if not banned, require full disclosure prior to doing them. Breaking the rules can generate significant penalties. Most people do not work in a situation where them interviewing for a new job puts their current employer at a significant competitive disadvantage. BTW, corporate America does use non-compete contracts where such situations could cause significant damage - intentionally breaking a non-compete (and subsequently being proved that you and your new employer lied about it) would cost you and your new employer a lot of money and potentially worse depending upon the business.

So who are the scumbags you are referring to, Chesney, Key, Deboer, Freeman, Lea, Drinkwitz, or one of the others who were interviewed?
Are you referring only to Meyer given his documented reputation?

College sports are not professional sports. The colleges dont want to make the athletes employees. Your point goes down the toilet because the actual players dont have to agree to those rules. You need the schools, conferences, coaches AND players. If they did agree then you would be complaining because it did not fit your exact plan.

Your plan is flawed from the start. You expect ALL schools to agree on the plan??? LOL. That is comical. The schools cant agree on anything. The schools themselves wont even stick to the plan. The first time a SEC team gets a chance to one up their competition they will negotiate different terms with the parties involved.

Almost none of us left a job half done, sabotaged the previous employer, took intellectual property and received millions in the process.

You dont see ANY professional coaches leave at the end of the season while their teams are still playing. Does not happen. You dont see it in college basketball either.

If a coach can be fired mid season why can't they leave?
Players can opt out to protect a redshirt.
And, yes, most of us have probably left a job (project/etc) half done...and would have definitely done so for millions.

Because the team is putting up TENS of MILLIONS. That is the difference. The schools put up ALL the money and the coaches dont put up a dime of their own money.

If a coach stinks and the school fires him and still pays him then he is made whole. He lost nothing. If a coach leaves early there really is not any way to make the school whole for season that implodes, lost recruiting class and potentially a multi year rebuild.

You don't need the players and coaches agreement, that's nonsense. The schools and their conferences most certainly can set the rules regarding transferring and coaches switching schools intra-season. The courts have merely said that pay-for-play cannot be forbidden, beyond that they have not said a thing about how schools and their conferences can regulate competition and eligibility upon transferring.

BTW, the fact that current Major CFB is too large to financially survive (and can't agree on everything like revenue-sharing for instance) - most of the G5 programs (and even some of the P4) are not viable in the current environment. They don't generate significant enough revenue (i.e., fan interest) to survive or even attempt to compete with the biggest programs. Major CFB is heading to a place where the two "Super Conferences" go off on their own as the highest level and create what is essentially their own pro-league. The remainder of FBS will become like the "minor league" of the new league created by the two Super Conferences.

The coach should have a buyout in their contract if the school truly wants to keep them. Maybe they should stop giving long term deals to guys that don't deserve them--start with Michigan State.
It shouldn't be a multi-year rebuild--one at most Portal.

That's because of the wat the NCAA has structured signing day and the portal. You can move sign day back to Feb and that wont hurt a thing. But if a kid wants transfer it has to happen in early January, at least if you want to make it look like College is still important. But without those two things changing coaches will have to leave before playoffs and bowls.

This is all going to continue to devolve as it is generating massive financial pressures on 90%++ of the athletic departments - it is not sustainable long-terms. This is the classic consolidation environment where you have to see who can bleed the longest..... then the survivors consolidate into a more sustainable smaller universe.

Sounds great, however, Terry or whoever they hire will still have to get in the mud and deal with recruiting the portal and NIL, unless of course you want to play with a bunch of walk ons.

Proof Kiffin could stay throughout the playoff

Nobody said it couldn't happen, the talking head said that they thought it was an impossibility because for it to happen, both the current school and leaving coach would have to agree to do something that was a clear conflict of interest for both parties (IOW, the talking heas did not believe that even CFB had devolved to this level of zero-ethics).

Only a cynical scumbag like you could be giddy with joy that it has and view this as good news for the direction and future of CFB.

Yep. Last I checked UGA had a 41% grad rate and this past week another athlete driving incident in Athens . Boys are driving their Dodge Challengers like it’s Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta .
