Maybe the most disappointing recruit with regards to hype and college production in a long time. Obviously now that he's skipping college, that's easy to say, but the level of anticipation and expectations surrounding that dude 3-4 years ago were insane.

Curious to see how high he rises in such a marginal draft. I've seen him in the 20s, but he's a true 7-footer with some perimeter skill and played pretty well in the last year. You'd think someone would gamble with him.

Wonder how this effects top recruits going forward?

Can't understand how he was ruled eligible. He was a freshman in 2012/2013. Means his graduating class would be the current one.

He'll be broke by 30. His posse is too large, almost as large as his ego.

Have to think Wenyen Gabriel, Jon Isaac, and Rawle Alkins are calling their lawyers right now

Anyone know anything about Gabriel didn't realize he was 1 year out of high school?

Just what the NBA needs to improve, those three players. But I guess the trend will continue for the NBA to grab the youngest available. All those scouts and bad pro teams need to act like they are building something special.[winking]

Small hands and average athleticism are two things you usually don't like to see when it comes to a frontcourt player. I'm kind of surprised about the average athleticism part. From reading about this kid for years, i've always thought his hops was once part of his game everyone raved about. The fact he has small hands is very concerning as well. The dude will get stripped and won't be able to hold on to the ball in the post for rebounds or making post moves. I know it sounds silly to worry about a kid's hands, but it does matter.

I seem to remember that Thon Maker reclassified last summer to the 2015 class and was looking to go to college right up until August and then changed his mind. I would assume that is where the NBA is getting that he is one year removed from graduating high school. Is that wrong?

I don't think the same would apply to Gabriel, Alkins, or Isaac.

I was also confused why high school mattered for Thon Maker. I thought different rules applied to international players. I thought the high school graduation part only applied to kids from the U.S. Am I wrong there?

Was wondering that myself. So now anyone who goes to prep school for a year and is 19 can enter? even though prep school is essentially still high school? Does not make sense to me, but I imagine that it comes down to the NBA wanting to cash in on him as opposed to let some foreign league have the honors for a year.

Guy was a red flag all along though. This is probably best for all involved. The kid can give 100% of his effort to basketball, his handler cashes in, his entourage get residual benefits, and whatever school would have landed him avoids a headache.

You're the GM. Him or Skal?

Skal, easily. There is video of him dominating Maker in one-on-ones a year ago, and that was before he spent a year with Kenny Payne.

But the Sixers will probably draft Maker to go with their 72 other bigs. :flush:

The NBA is setting a precedent with this ruling. The emphasis is clearly on age, and they're allowing a loose definition of "graduating" and "high school". So you're going to see some other kids take this route. Shouldn't be too many, as most players can use the college exposure, and most players don't hate school so much that they can't stomache 8 months of pseudo-classes, but the guys who are tempted will probably be top 10 type of recruits. Watch out for DeAndre Ayton next year. He's sort of a tweener, in that he won't turn 18 until late July, but that's still good enough to meet the 19 year old rule for the 2017 draft.

Thon Should end up on a playoff team and chance to develop his game. We shall see how he turns out. Can he be like a durant or will he be like a Kwami Brown and fizzle on out of league in few years. I think it comes down to What organization he ends up at and how the develop him.

I stayed at the same hotel as Thon and his team when I went to the Marshall Co. Hoopfest. I talked to him one morning while eating breakfast and was very impressed with the young mans maturity and friendliness. He acted like he would have loved to have been a Wildcat. This was after Cal was no longer was interested in him.

Isaac was going to try this a couple months ago but backed out.. Maybe he will now?
Isaac is 6'9", and like 135 lbs. He needs to eat a crap ton of pizza for a year in college or some NBA forwards will use him to pick things out of their teeth.
