That'd be great and on par for them.. He can lead them to the second round like they are used to
It's kind of a head scratcher though because he is not going to get the playing time like he and his family supposedly want with frank mason being there.

DT will be older, mature and experienced. Self is a terrible coach... Great recruiter... He won that SHIP, because Cal was worst. Sherron Collins vs Derrick Rose helped a bit too. DT will run the show, maybe leave in a year.

With the Champions Classic, if he did land there Duke would definitely play him at some point.

Great for him. Made bonehead freshman mistakes that most freshman make. Personally, I wasn't too high on him, seemed too unpredictable with ball handling for me (erratic passes, dribbling off his foot, risky handling moves, etc..) however I always wanted him to take over the game. Many times he would blow past the first defender and have a wide open floater/layup but instead passed.

I think he said he wanted to play closer to home and that is closer to home. OFC

Had very little to do with it actually.

Maybe Bill Self can please his mom and dad by making the offense strictly about Derryck? He goes to Kansas we likely we play him in the classic. So i hope ON COURT he fails.

We play Kansas this year (DT wouldn't be playing) and I'm assuming the games will follow the same trend (MSU then UK then Kansas) meaning we would not play Kansas again until the 2019-2020 season. This would be DT's senior year (provided he sits out this year) so who knows if he will even be around or will be playing pro ball by then.

He was supposed to be a senior in high school. Not a freshman in college in a tough conference. Do you think that could have had something to do with his performance?

Really a shame for some people who are bashing this kid. Kid came a year early to Duke and gave it his all. It sucks that he's got outside influences that are pulling him in different directions and it didn't work out for us here. Let's not knock him for not "shooting well," "not playing in the pro's- after one year" and call Bill Self a terrible coach. We just look petty when we do that.

I agree....no use in going that route. Wish the kid the best and move on. Duke will be fine without him and he'll be fine without Duke.

Ehh just cause we don't like him doesn't mean we are bashing him. I hope he does great and all his dreams come true.. But I'm glad it's not here

He's a good kid - and a talented player. He wanted to be at Duke but ultimately the fit wasn't right.

I believe Duke will miss him at some point next season, even with the loaded roster.

I tend to some what agree Crank, hard to teach experience.

I do however think we'll be Ok, because the GOAT (coach K) will make the necessary adjustments with the roster we have.

GO DUKE.

I still think his defense would have been a huge factor and the point guard position more than what they would need offensively. I'm sure our team will be fine without him, but that defensive presence would have been nice. Hopefully the guards we have can step up and play tremendous D.
I really loved that 99 team that beat everyone by nearly 30 points or more. I'd like to see that next year.

Overall, our interior and perimeter defense will be much improved. Losing DT defense will be missed, but having a good interior will help out tremendously. Honestly, if this team lives up to their potential, this could be one of the best offensive and defensive Duke teams we've seen in long time.

Which is saying something offensively, because last year's squad was one of the best K has had during his tenure. Now defense, that's another story.

He will definitely be missed during the season. I don't know much about Frank yet but I'm under the impression he is a score first guard. Would be nice to have a pass first pg with some experience either starting or off the bench.

I agree, next year's offense will be stupid good! We will have 6 or 7 guys who score 20+ any given night. I'm anxious to see how this team gels.

Offense will take care of itself with this squad. I REALLY want to see them board and get stops. What made '14-'15 so good is that they got stops when needed. They were pretty rough on D to start the year, but finished very well.

'15-'16 the defense was rough at best.

Crank I understand what you mean about missing him next season but how will we ever fully know. We can't just pause things next season and rewind and insert DT back into the lineup. You have to live in the present with what you have. I'll think of it like he played his OAD season and left for the NBA.

I don't totally disagree, but as I understand it, Derryck and his people didn't want him being a pass first PG. If that's the case, then I think ultimately Duke is coming out ahead. And that's not a knock on Thornton whatsoever.

I always hate this talk of pass first/score first. Shouldnt a good PG just do whatever is necessary. If you arent a threat to score in at least some way (other than relatively open lay ups) then you really shouldnt be on the court for most good teams. PGs need to be able to shoot and pass and create and drive and finish and make all of the these decisions routinely during the flow of a game. If Jackson or Allen or Giles or whoever is the best option for that then they are a good PG. DT will likely improve, but his size and shooting woes made him an offensive liability last year. Defenses could plan on leaving him and it hurt the team's flow
