Been there, done that and got the T-shirt years ago. Still holds true not only for kids, but also spouses.
I put together a desk last night which was easy. Getting the parts out of the box took some effort though.

And those pesky sealed plastic packaging thingies that cut the heck out of your hands.
I had to dig out 2 9v batteries. They're probably 10 years old but they still worked. I wasn't aware that things were still made that required them.
Crazy story coming. I still own a TI-30 calculator purchased new in 1985. Damn thing still worked, last I looked in 2006, with the original batteries.
My oldest son went through a phase about 9-10 years ago when he wanted those Transformer like toys that came in a thousand pieces, and he loved putting them together. He has since been the "some assembly required" guru.

I guess I'm in the minority but I like putting stuff together. That's part of the fun of it.
Depends on what it is, my level of knowledge of what it is, and how well written AND drawn the directions are
As long as I did not have to do it all night Christmas Eve.
One year I bought my daughter a ping pong table. It took hours to put the big heavy damn thing together. But I had to buy a good one for me... her....
This summed up every toy my kids got this year. Now I have to go buy a ton of freaking batteries.
I made sure to have my pocket knife on me just for the damned toy packaging.
Mothertouchers have started using wire.
I am lucky. My kids just want the expensive electronics that require very little assembly. Hardest thing I did was setup an XBox One. The rest was putting cases on tablets and cell phones.
