I’ve been thinking on this since the incident first broke and why it angered me. The reason it angered me is that it sends two messages to the community you’re trying to protest and serve. First, it says your life isn’t worth anything. And like it or not, Chauvin represented the entire force. Just like when I was uniform, I knew my actions or those of other Marines could taint all of us. I remember reading about a couple of Marines that raped some Okinawan woman back in the day and a lot of commentary surrounding it was that it was just par for the course. I didn’t like that my honor was being tainted by these two shitheads.
Second, it perpetuates a cycle. It’s an escalation of force in which the other side will escalate. What I mean is, with these encounters, they will become increasingly hostile on both sides of the equation. I think we all saw the video, Floyd was resisting arrest, twice. And let’s not forget, he was under suspicion of using counterfeit money. We’ve discussed his looooooong rap (sp?) sheet, to and including the incident with the pregnant woman. He wasn’t a good guy, I’d argue he was a complete piece of ****. But back to this second point, how many of these types of incidents are due to the overzealous policing from decades prior? To the point where both sides see each other as the enemy. One of my best friends told me when he was growing up in Gary, IN that he and his buddies used to play a game called “chase”, which was for no reason at all, they’d just take off running from a cop to see if they could get him to chase them. This was the 80s and since then we’ve had the War on Drugs which has completely escalated the amount of police interactions.
Lastly, I’m pissed because justice was denied. It was denied Floyd and it was denied the people of the US seeing that gentlemen arrested and incarcerated. This ******* robbed my nation of Justice because he murdered a would be conviction. That’s unacceptable.
