Might be accepting a job there. Currently live in Pennsylvania. Parts to avoid? Good parts to live? Moving down by myself.

I am ready for the dipsh*t responses, but if anyone can give me any sort of useful info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lived here 8 years, it is a fantastic place to live.

I guess where you want to live depends on (1) how much you want to spend and (2) where your work will be.

Grew up about 40' South of Nashville. It's an awesome town. Certainly there are places to avoid, but every town has places like that......and you'll usually know by your surroundings where they are.

Where will your work be located? I can help steer you from there.

Anytime you have the opportunity to live in Nashville, you take it. Even if it means leaving a family behind. There are plenty of hot singles in Nash Angeles.

Eat at Hattie B's Hot Chicken ASAP.

Nashville is a great town. New minor league baseball stadium, the Predators are very fun to see, Rolling Stones are coming there this summer. A lot happening. North Nashville is pretty rough. Brentwood is expensive but a nice, safe place to live.

Nashville is for big whores. Probably one of the faster growing cities in America if I had to guess. If the people are running this way, your best bet would be to run the other way. Words to live by.

North of Nashville are a couple of suburbs that aren't too bad: Hendersonville and Gallatin. As with most negative things that have been mentioned here, every city has traffic issues and Nashville does as well. But these are decent communities with mostly decent people.

Here is an interesting website that shouldn't be the end all of places to live but could be a good contributor to your decision:

Until we get details on where your job may be located, we can discuss culture and climate.

-Compared to Pennsylvania it will be friggin hot and humid. My Michigan side of the family would stop by for visits during their Summer vacations. We'd want to plan outdoor picnics and such, but all they ever wanted to do was find an air conditioner. Temp bounces around 90 during the Summer.....with humidity spiking well north of 90%.

-You'll miss snow. Tennessee may get a couple inches spread over the entire winter. They do get wicked ice storms though. Just have canned goods on hand, call into work, and hole up till it melts away.

-Due to the warmer and more regulated climate, you won't notice abrupt season changes. Those that transplant from northern states often miss the color changes come Fall.

-The people are generally friendlier in the way they interact with each other. Southern Hospitality and all. And they move and talk slower. Drivers are often slower and less aggressive than up North. They don't seem to be in as much of a rush in general.

-You'll probably catch ribbing for being a "Yankee." Just brush it off and pay it no mind.

-You'll find it hard to talk about pro sports or BigTEN. SEC fans are everywhere.

It's true. The Music City isn't known for having music. It's like calling someone that is huge, "Tiny"....

I currently live out west end and work in cool springs, love it, travel the opposite of traffic and can get to anything social quickly.

Hipsters have claimed East Nashville as their own if you are into that kind of thing.

I used to buy weed in Gallatin when I was in school at WKU.

Good selection, decent prices, bulk discount.

Live there.

One of my cousins lives just east of Gallatin. I plan to visit him for a day in a couple weeks. Meanwhile, an old Army buddy currently resides in Murfreesboro and formerly lived in Antioch.

My recommendations: Consider Lebanon. Music City Star commuter train runs 5 days per week between downtown Nashville and Lebanon. Train schedules here. It was a nice place 32+ years ago when I frequented the area. Doubled in size since, like everywhere else. May get some better deals on rent.

Dickerson Pike/Trinity Lane area was pretty wild back in the day (1982-1983). Unsure about nowadays. I hope to visit downtown Nashville on April 28 and hit up Verela's for some Chili.

Gallatin definitely has its sketch areas but there are also some very nice developments. You might check out the Indian Lakes area in Hendersonville.

I spent a week in Nashville a while back for work. I really dreaded going but it was great. Whatever kind of area you're looking for, Nashville has it. Nice people too.

If single, (or even married without kids) and making any reasonable money, downtown would be a fantastic place to live. Great restaurants, bars, Titans, Predators, concerts---and not just country, brand new AAA Baseball stadium, all close by.

If kids, Brentwood/Franklin is a great place to raise them. Excellent schools, safe, great community facilities, kids sports, etc.

West End is typically old Nashville money and/or Vandy area.

As someone said, East Nashville is doing well but trendy, hipster and somewhat eclectic. (Although there's a pretty good music community there, including Jack White and others.)

Outskirt towns like Hendersonville, Murfreesboro, Mt. Juliet, etc. all good suburban areas and still not a bad drive into town compared to most cities Northeast.

Compared to most Northeastern cities and states, taxes are significantly less and property values are much less. No state income tax and even the property taxes are low comparatively.

M'Festivus.....MegaBlue above pointed out that he was able to locate and procure (at a significantly reduced rate for purchasing a large amount of) marijuana in Gallatin.

Can you please elaborate on where I might find marijuana in Gallatin, TIA

Ahh, Lebanon. Home of Cumberland University and the Original Cracker Barrel.......and a pretty little girl that I used to date back in the day. Fond memories.

Gallatin Pike, Dickerson Pike, Edgehill, Wedgewood, Nolensville Rd, Buchana, and Bourdeaux areas have some nice homes at a pretty good value. Just drive to Nashville find a realtor, or better yet, Google some of the neighborhoods I mentioned and drive thru them. Edgehill and Bourdeaux, and maybe Wedgewood is where I would start first. They are closer to downtown and not a long drive to anywhere. Stay clear of Antioch, The Boro, and Fisk area. Good luck in your search.

Left Nashvegas in 1981 and never looked back (tired of the family drama). Having posted this, I offer Thompson's Station for your consideration. Just south of Franklin and close to TN 840 and I-65. Good schools and Cool Springs is nearby. Of course I remember when it was all farms...but those days are gone forever. The good thing about TS is that if you get a home there, you will have a decent sized lawn instead of those postage stamp sized lots in the 'trendy' areas.

If you want to drive 5 more minutes south, Spring Hill is a nice area too. When I was at home, Spring Hill had about 1200 residents. Now it's 30K and growing, so that tells you something.

In Davidson County proper, I'd look into East Nashville. Sure, it's Hipster Land, but there's deals to be found as far as real estate is concerned.

Wow, a vote for Thompson Station? Awesome. I grew up between just SE of there. That's Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus territory. My dad worked for GM in Spring Hill. Even dated a girl that lived in Spring Hill.

22...my brother lives in TS. Loves it there. My childhood years were spent in Columbia, but my teen years were in Nashville. Am well familiar with Spring Hill (yeah, it's STILL a speed trap to this day!). My sister worked at Saturn until she had to go on disability. Brother works at Nissan. He drives from TS to Smyrna every dang day (I couldn't do it)!

Edit: If you grew up SE of TS... I'm guessing you were in shouting distance of Chapel Hill?

TS has had some pretty damn good football teams also. If I recall, the bad *** rb UT signed is from there. We played against Brentwood Academy when I was in high school, they killed us. Bunch of rich, uppity white boys that handed us a beat down I did not forget for a while.

TS's high school is Independence High I believe, and they do have a good program. If you're talking about Jalen Hurd, he went to Beech, which is in Hendersonville's school district. Brentwood Academy finally got tamed a few years ago (they can't recruit like they used to able to) so they aren't as dominant as they were. But never fear, Ensworth has taken over as the big, bad, private school in the Nashville metro area.
