Thoughts on the read option, we are running

I know the read option is the thing now in football. Not negative, here, just thoughts on our offensive. Are we really running a read option, with the wildcat running the football a lot of the time. When Johnson is QB, he seldom runs. I know he is brittle because of size. I think we are running a power running game. I like it, not complaining.

The more I think about it, the more I think we run the read only a handful of times per game because the staff can't trust Johnson not to fumble. The rest is just a handful with Johnson carrying out a fake.

We need to go back to the read. We run better out of it. It ties up a defender having to respect Johnson carrying the ball. There's the threat of pass. jmo

Johnson keeps it on read option 2-3 times a game and usually gets 6-12 yards almost everytime he keeps it. I think I can remember Towles/Barker keeping in only 2-3 times entirely last year (usually on goalline).

Having a threat to run keeps the DE honest from crashing down on our running game. Look back to Boom's TD run vs. Mizzou to open the game...it was started by an unblocked DE that didn't crash down on Boom and choose to stay with Johnson.

I'd hate to go more non running QB threat next year and see our rushing attack take a step back. To be honest, it's the only thing we have as an identity on the entire team IMO.

Having been to many Oregon games, who have run the read option to perfection, this is nowhere close to a read option offense. Now, if Cobb was behind center, that could be a scary read option offense!

the staff had made it pretty apparent during the NMST game they didn't want Johnson to carry the ball. He is 180 lbs and cant take many hits. This is one of the reasons I think that Hoak is pretty far behind Johnson.

We have done nothing but protect Johnson in the run and even pass game. he is probably out only option at QB who the staff feels even a tad bit comfortable with (let the sink in)

Personally I think Johnson needs to shovel pass to Baker as he's crossing on a couple of occasions. This will at least keep the defense honest and makes them have to account for him coming across the field. When we never did that, the defense never paid any mind to him crossing. I think if you do it a couple of times, you see a little more running room for Snell on that final drive.

I wish we would run the simple toss sweep some, with Johnson under center.

Strong and physical OL that is improving every game...two of the better RBs in the conference, maybe country by the time next year rolls around...a running QB who can move the chains forward on the ground...

We have the personnel for a heavy ground attack with some option elements, but this team is better suited for a more traditional power attack, North/South running down hill between the tackles.

Agree, but we still have to go outside occasionally to slow down the defense from constantly clogging up the middle.
