Three things that have to change for NU to get to the dance....

1) This one is obvious - guard play. NU will be ok at the 2 for the next two years with Gaines but Collins needs a PG. the dream here is Buie next year is good but then the Cats land long time target DJ Steward. Also Max Christie was at the game yesterday and he has a strong link to NU. These guys are realistic targets only bc Collins has been recruiting them for years.

2) NU needs a star. Star is someone who just bails you out when you got nothing. Look at the box score of yesterday’s game. The talent was pretty level and NU was probably more athletic but Edwards destroyed NU. Best match up if the day was Nojel Eastern v Nance. Nance really improved defensively when he came back from mono. But the game is still to fast for him at the offensive end. Offensive Game really started to slow down for Kopp in last few weeks. Both players have all the potential I thought they did. I just hoped to see more this year.

3) Free throw disparity has to shrink. NU plays defense really hard but they got way too many fouls with their hands and sometimes lacked the quickness to get out of the way. That said Illinois shooting 65 free throws in 80 minutes over two games is crazy. Purdue Iowa both shot over 20 at WR. The only reason Ohio State reached 15 in the first half was two touch fouls on 3s. Part of this goes back to No. 2 above. Also Vic is a 3 and d guy and Pardon is undersized. Both are not this kind of players who draw fouls.

I think that this is now Anthony Gaines team. AJ turner is your 3 although both are ideally twos. Kopp is a solid as a third wing and starter next year. I think Nance will come off the bench at least to start the year but that could change. Next year could be rough in the post with Benson and Young. I have no idea about Greer and Buie at point.

I’ll add that this really is big year for Collins. Getting Jared Jones signed - apparently a formality at this point - is the no 1 priority. Then start re ruining the heck out of the 2020s and keep pushing the Caleb Furst and Christie class. An early commit from a top 100 guard would be huge.

I think Nance will start at the 5 if he can put on enough muscle.

Then you should be prepared for him to spend a lot of time on the beach with foul trouble against teams with any kind of inside presence. They would just post against him all day to make him bang inside.

I would be unsurprised if the starting 4 and 5 were both occupied by freshmen (Young + other) by the first conference game, presumably early December.

I don’t want Nance to get bigger necessarily - I’d rather have him as a super-sized 3 (though roster construction dictates that he probably needs to become a 4.)

Re: Star
Kopp needs to believe in himself and needs to never lose his aggression. CCC needs to make Kopp believe he’s The Guy. I don’t think Kopp took a second-half shot yesterday (box score/play-by-play skimming only), and that just can’t happen.

As opposed to Benson, who picks up fouls at around 7 per 40 minutes

Great post. Completely agree with all of it. Really, really interested to see what kind of recruiting news we get in the next several months. Collins has to run a three-pronged attack:

1) Scour the transfer market and try to find a couple of guys who can at least compete for 10-12 minutes per game in the Big Ten for the 2019-2020 season. Promise a point guard and a big every chance to win a starting position. I hope Buie is the answer but we can't be sure. I don't think Benson is the answer to play 30 minutes a game down low. Expect a committee.

2) Lock in a guy like Steward early to show other 2020 recruits that NU's momentum hasn't faded. Maybe then a guy like Ethan Morton will take a fresh look at NU.

3) Keep Christie as an absolute top priority. He is the potential game-changing star (maybe even one-and-done) that could take NU to a new level.

Good post! A few details strike me. A lot of our motion early in the shot clock ran through Pardon at the top of the key. A big waste of time more often than not. Having a big with an outside shot would make that set much more effective. Young and Nance can both contribute some in that way.

Our players need to improve their shooting. (Duh) A whole lot! (Duh^2) I still have my "make shots" shirt, but it seems like a critique now.

Gaines and maybe greer want to be good at the dribble drive, and both need more dribbling moves, like hesitation, head fake, crossover, floater, etc. Elite ball handling takes a lot of hard work. If Winston can develop so well a strong guy like Gains can too.

Maybe for the first few games, but that won't last long. He is what he is. He's just not athletic enough to play at this level.

Have no idea what Ryan Young can do, but the other option would appear to be Jones assuming he enrolls. Nance sure doesn’t seem like a 5 now.

If Nance has a shot at the NBA, it will be as a stretch 4 or 5. The key for us would be pairing him with a physical, defensive-minded power forward. Maybe Jones or a grad transfer could fill that that role.

NBA? Nice one! He has a long way to go to be a competent B1G player. He probably regrets not playing AAU ball in high school. The level of competition Revere played was not challenging......

It's not unreasonable when your father and brother made the NBA (and the brother was a noted late bloomer). Anyway, it's lonely here on Pete Nance Island, but we'll welcome everyone back next year.

Pete is going to be fine. Compare his road to NU and his frosh stats to his brother's (road to Wyoming) and it's a similar story. People laughing about him possibly playing in the NBA would have been laughing at his brother's chances, too, after averaging 4 ppg in 18 mpg at Wyoming. Pete will have every opportunity to play in the NBA because he's got good skills, good size, and an NBA family.

Agreed about all of our frosh. 2-3 more years in the weight room can do wonders. My other team always has stars who were 3 stars who changed their bodies and developed their skills. Draymond, Darnell Valentine, Ward, Tillman and Goins from this year's team, etc. We can do that too, just not as well.

Valentine, Ward and Tillman were all 4*s. But former walk-on Goins is a good case study.

At the risk of vastly oversimplifying things, Northwestern needs at least a couple of players who can consistently make shots. It's called basketball because you need to put the ball in the basket, and it's been hit-or-miss the past couple of seasons. With the modern emphasis on the three-point shot, shooting has never been more important. Barely 40 percent field-goal shooting is not going to cut it. That was a good night for my sophomore HS team back in '63, not for a B1G college team in '19. The guy from Evansville who was supposed to help us with this really didn't get it done and, unfortunately, neither did anyone else.

I actually think Young, Benson and Jones will make an OK set of Bigs. And with three for a change can play two at a time giving a different look. . I think Benson could develop significantly as he gets the minutes and has a different role. Because of different priorities, I think he will cut down his fouls

I am a proud inhabitant of the Pete Nance island as well! Is it similar to the Island of Misfit Toys, or the Island where the people on Survivor get sent to now when they are voted out?

Only one thing. Ask Collins what he needs and give it to him. That's how Duke did it, and why we haven't. So we're still the tentative NU of old?

I get that impression that the university IS giving Collins what he wants.

(I presume that academic exceptions or looking the other way on other character issues is not something Collins wants).

There’s a big difference in my mind between academic exceptions and character issues.
