Time of possession

“As fast as we can go right out of the gate,” Gran answered before Stoops added, “As fast as we can go as long as we’re getting first downs and points.”

IMO a key to going to a bowl game is keeping the ball in our offenses hands. Playing to our strengths and running the ball should ensure any close game such as Miss St and Missouri results in a win for us.

The stats show that when we maintain the ball and have the time of possession advantage we increase our chances of winning. This was the case in all our games except in a game against Alabama where we were outmatched at every position.

IMO the turn around on defense is directly linked to the time the offense is on the field. It shortens the clock and gives less chance for the opposition to score and more rest for our defensive players. We have more depth on the offensive side of the ball which allows us to substitute guys in and out for breathers. Our defensive line is thin, those guys get gassed and our defense falls to pieces.

Bottom line, keep the ball, get 1st downs and score. Just like Stoops said before the season started.

The hurry up offense is as likely to result in offensive errors/penalties, as in defensive errors, IMHO.

I'm not sure how much it "helps" the defense but the Cats are definitely playing slower than any of Gran's offenses at Cincy. UK is #119 in plays/game at 65.5. Gran's offenses at Cincy the past 3 years were #10, #62 and #28 at 82.3, 74.1 and 77.9 PPG respectively. I wonder what he is doing with all his spare time on the sideline! [laughing]

Peace

I always hate it when UK scores too fast, we know we are going to control the los so just run it down their throat. Run the old Woody Hayes offense, trhee yds and a cloud of dust. Save money on an OC., don't need an OC, just go off LT, off RT, up the gut.

The change in QB means a change in perspective. We have not been playing from behind in the last 4 games, except Bama. So, we have not been in forced passing situations very often.
