Everytime I go to a Subway, Quiznos or some sort of deli, a tip jar is right in front of the register with a huge sign.

I was at a Jersey Mikes about a month ago. When the woman gave me my change back, she grabbed the tip jar, looked inside, and put it back in front of me.....obviously trying to signal for me to tip. Not only is it rude, but why in the world should I tip a broad for making my sandwich that I already get charged for? Ok, want me to tip you---refill my drink a couple of times, bring me my napkins and clean up my mess. Everyone has a hand out these days..

I think it's rude that bartenders put a huge tip jar right in the way. The first time I buy a drink I like to put a few coins for the sound, just to show I'm not intimidated. The only problem is that, after a couple of hours there and a lot more beer, I'm dropping big bills because that bartender is a great guy and my best friend in the world.

Damn OP, how cheap do you have to be to not throw a few loose coins in a jar after some chick made you a sammich?

I STG I hate poors, especially whiny ones that feel the need to post about how GD poor/cheap they are.

This is why America is done. I don't do my job yet pay me
"Don't do my job"? Every example is of someone who has, in fact, done their job. Maybe you should spend less time fornicating with the deceased and spend more time reading a book.

I haven't had to worry about this trend, as I've always rounded up to the highest bill and smugly proclaimed "keep the change, helper-person".

You guys must be really poor.

I'll give a little change out if I'm feeling charitable. I don't take offense to a cup or jar just being there. Thinking like that probably leads to *** cancer.

Tipping bartenders has it's benefits though. For starters, bars are more localized establishments with regular customers. Bartending, while not rocket science, does require good social skills. Your average burger flipper can't tend bar. You're more than just a drive-thru customer to a bartender. So If you're a poor tipper, you'll be sure to get served last. If you tip 20% or more, you'll probably be served first every time. They remember their good customers and their bad ones. "This rounds on me" only comes from good tipping.

I tip 25-30% at a bar, and that gets me buybacks, over-pours, and generally great service. For me, and the amount of time I spend at a bar, it's worth the investment.

My favorite bar burned down 3 years ago. I'm still in mourning. Everything in your last 2 sentences was the gospel truth at Squeeze.

Should you tip if they only are handing you a bottle of beer? Really the guy busting butt in the back bringing the beer up . restocking and icing it down is doing all the work.

Different depending on the bar. A College bar or a seasonal bar? All they do is open mass quantities of bottles and sometime pour it into a plastic cup. For that, a upfront tip of a few bucks is fine.

Other times, the bartender is also part-time bar back, serves food, brings drinks around to tables, etc. Meanwhile, he's making white sangria one minute and pouring a Guinness the next. That guy deserves more than the average tip, and if he's half way good (chances are yes, otherwise he would have been long gone), he'll remember your face in the otherwise blur of his shift.

@GhostVol Yeah, I had a bar I liked burn down a while back, and what they reopened not only wasn't the same, it became one of the worst bars in the area. If I say "no" to a bar, that means it's bad. I can't imagine what I'd do if some of my favorite watering holes went up in flames. No lie, the local bar by me asked me to bartend recently because "Well, you're here so often, you pretty much know everyone and all the drinks. Our only hangup is we'd lose your business that day.."

Would love to start a bar thread, but just don't think enough paddock posters are bar people. Either drinking at home in anger, or are just shifty-eyed potheads like @Willy4UK

Maybe one day.

Cheap-- Then why don't you PayPal me 10 bucks for writing this post for you to comment on.
And dropping loose change into a tip jar is worse than not leaving anything at all, its like telling the waiter to go ahead and put 5% on the bill for a tip.

Handing somebody a $5 for a $4 sandwich and telling them to keep the change is worse than leaving nothing at all? It's one thing to be poor, but to be poor and stupid is on a whole other level.

I hate poors.
I hate stupids.
I REALLY hate poors who are stupid.

HA, just busting balls. Beer bars have been popping up around me.. but still kind of pretentious. And if you're trying to stay somewhat healthy, it has to be hard liquor.
