Yeah, math.

Here’s my feeling about the MTV era, wrapped up in a cheesy Facebook post quote.

As far as I'm concerned, it died about 28 years ago when it quit actually promoting music and started 'reality' TV shows. I was a HUGE fan for maybe 7-10 years and kept up with the music scene through MTV. When they started doing less and less videos, I quit watching. I understand the industry went away from music videos as a promotional tool but there are other ways to promote music other than videos. I want my MTV!

The bad thing about Video Killed the Radio Star is that it was so true. It meant yhat music didn't have to stand on its own anymore. Just add some strobe lights and women in bikinis to distract from how bad a lot of the music was. Madonna for example.

Comcast cable was giving these away to promote them going on the air:

I rode my Schwinn Varsity three miles to their offices in Paducah. I wore the **** out of that in eighth grade.

I'm going to speculate that by 10th grade, the sleeves were off and it became a muscle shirt.

During the first six months that they were broadcasting, you had to watch it every available moment. You did not want to be the kid who hadn't seen so-and so's video.

Oh and I wasn’t into style nor fashion but yeah I’d check out House of Style occasionally for that stone cold fox Cindy Crawford and was finally handsomely rewarded once when she was sporting a thong bathing suit and I was sporting a rager...

I loved it. Then I hated it. Now I don’t even know if it’s still a thing. I’m guessing it is.

I used to get Palladia on Dish Network and really enjoyed it, especially when they had footage from the big festivals like Glastonbury, etc. It became Mtv Live and immediately started sucking.

There was nothing better than MTV’s Spring Break. Particularly Beauty and the Beast. Ed Lover had himself some fun on that show.

MTV was way ahead of the trend when it comes to completely changing their programming to be something entirely different from their name and original content.

Just look at all the other networks that did the same:

VH1 (movies more than music)
A&E (currently showing "Live PD")
Headline News (remember when they actually showed news?)
The Learning Channel (now reality shows for brides and wives)
History Channel (aliens!)
Discovery Channel (well, there's still shark week)
Weather Channel (reruns of how planes crash)
CNN, Fox News, MSNBC (mostly political propaganda instead of actual news)
