Today's bowl games

The Cyclones blew down the field for a TD in the first 2 minutes against 10-2 Memphis. This doesn't surprise me, even though ISU is only 7-5. This a much better Clones team than the record shows, and Memphis played a much softer schedule.

I'm not going against the Big 12 tide again this year, because I don't want to be proven wrong!

I was watching Mississippi State and Louisville, but I saw no indication that it would be anything but a wild shootout of teams that can't stop each other. I find that boring.

The other bowls today look really interesting: Washington-Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl, and Wisconsin-Miami in the Orange Bowl.

I am so happy for the Cyclones!!! Times have been pretty awful for them lately, and this must seem like a dream come true to them, what with playing in late December in a very good Liberty Bowl game against a ranked hometown team, and taking a 14-7 lead into halftime.

It's the matchups that I like. Don't forget that the Big Ten championship game was almost won by Wisconsin, which would have put them in the playoff at 13-0. Miami insists that they will return to the "turnover chain" team we saw early this year, but I don't believe them.

Penn State was how many points from being unbeaten? 4-5 maybe? Washington is hard to figure. Sometimes they look unbeatable, sometimes they stumble over theiir own feet. We could see either one.

Do you have better things to do? I probably do, but since this is one of only 3 gamedays left in the season, I'm getting a fill-up for the barren stretch ahead...

The Cyclones just went for 17 yards on a 3rd & 18, and now want to try to get a 1st on 4th/1, in Memphis territory, leading 21-20 with about 8 minutes left.

Timeout clones. Absolutely HUGE play coming up!

GOT IT!

Now 2nd & 4 at the 24 of Memphis with under 8 minutes left. I see a BIG UPSET LOOMING!

Now 1st down at Memphis 19. Make it 2nd & 10 now.

1st and Goal at Memphis 2! Burn clock Clones, don't give 'em time to come back.

A FOOT FROM TD, 4 MINUTES LEFT, 3RD DOWN!!!

Now calling a TOUCHBACK. Saying fumble, but it looked to me that ISU had crossed the goal first.

STAY TUNED!

I can't stand this. The officials just gave Memphis a first down on a faked foul against their receiver, which kept their late drive alive.

They need any score to take the lead away from ISU. This is one that people are going to talk about if Memphis ends up STEALING this game.

It's now 3rd & 10 for Memphis is their own territory. Now 4th and 10.

IT'S GAME RIGHT HERE IF MEMPHIS DOESN'T GET 10 YARDS.

First down, close play. Now 3rd & 10 for Memphis again. 2 minutes left.

4th and 10, again. HOW MANY TIMES CAN THEY AVOID THE END?

I entered the ESPN bowl picks contest this year, hurriedly made 40 picks just before things ramped up (missed one game deadline). Maybe spent 15 minutes making cold picks, no research whatsoever.

This morning for the first time I have surpassed the 50th percentile among (confidence game) picks. I'm now at 69% after getting the 1st two games right today. What's more interesting to me is that (in theory) I could score more points than the current game leader!

Can't win though, that's a certainty. With no money essentially at stake (no one will ever get all the picks correct), it's just a fun time waster to see how you do.

After the Lions almost choked against the Huskies and the Badgers fell behind Cotton Candy 14-3 early, it looked like my lucky streak on picks was gonna be over.

Not to worry for now, because the Badgers reverted to who they are, and Cotton Candy is still soft, gooey and insubstantial.

Wisky 24 MyOhMy 14, at the half.
