Everyone seems to have their go-to holiday favorites to watch with family and friends around this time of year. Comedy, drama, animated, TV special, etc.

Here's Mine:

1. A Christmas Story
2. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
3. Die Hard
4. Home Alone
5. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
6. Elf
7. The Polar Express
8. The Santa Clause
9. A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey version)
10. Scrooged

I know a lot of people will include the Capra classic 'It's a Wonderful Life', but although it is a great movie, it is not a holiday film that I routinely sit down and watch with my family and friends. To each their own though.

Your list is pretty standard in my opinion. All of them, expect Die Hard, my wife and two kids(12 & 8) watch every Christmas season.

5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
6. Frosty the Snowman
7. A Charlie Brown Christmas

1. Disney's a Christmas Carol (with Scrooge McDuck)
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated)
3. A Charlie Brown Christmas
4. Christmas Vacation

That's all the pure nostalgia I can handle each year.

IMO, all versions of "A Christmas Carol" pale to the 1951 version as Alastair Sim is by far the best Scrooge ever. Jim Carrey, The Fonz, Capt. Picard, George C. Scott, Albert Finny, Tim Curry, Michael Caine, etc. do not live up to his version.

I prefer George C Scott version better. Albert Finney is very good as well.

1984 Christmas Carol
1951 Christmas Carol
Scrooge with Albert Finney

Those are the 3 best Christmas movies to me. I go back and forth on 51/84.

Then A Christmas Story
It's a Wonderful Life
The Walton's Homecoming

Then everything else.

I saw Scrooged in theater in late 80's or 90, never saw it again. Thought it was horrible.

My vote for worst Christmas movie ever is Jingle All The Way. Arnold and Sinbad fight over an action figure for two hours of suck.

Christmas Vacation and it's not even close.

"...And when Santa squeezes his fat white *** down our chimney tonight, he's going to find the jolliest bunch of ******** this side of the nuthouse."

Tho they are only in the last 3rd of Christmas Vacation, Louis and Bethany steal the movie.

"What's that squeaking sound?"

"You couldn't hear a dump truck drive through a nitroglycerin plant!"

Everyone's going to get roughly the same list. Some hot takes:

  • Christmas Vacation is probably #1, but man if it isn't getting played out a bit.
  • Muppet Christmas Carol is the most underrated Christmas movie of all time. Dickens. The Music. The Muppets. Victorian setting. Staler And Waldorf as Marley and Marley. And Michael Caine.
  • Christmas Story is the most overrated. Always left me with a dirty feeling. Probably because they are poor.
  • Scrooged has quickly climbed the ranks. Only saw it for the first time a few years ago (all the way through). Murray is the man.

I think that's why Christmas Vacation's stock has leveled off for me.. it's the same quotes for the last 15 years. It's a well that's kind of running dry.

I find myself saying "Mr. McCalister.. your very own.. Cheese pizza.." Way more than the hashed out Christmas Vacation quotes.

Clark's reaction to the Jelly of the Month Club is better than anything in any other Christmas movie.

Oh, and: "Where's Eddie? He usually eats these goddamned things."

Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. It's an action film that just happens to take place at Christmas time. But it is NOT a Christmas movie.

I enjoy all versions of A Christmas Carol. The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite. And no Christmas season is complete without...

A Christmas Story
Bad Santa
Christmas Vacation
Elf
Scrooged

You are right about this but there was one with Patrick Stewart a few years ago that I like a lot. Stewart is a trip. Sim was a great actor.

Glad to see people put Die Hard on their list. Ive always said it is a Christmas movie.

It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Carol
White Christmas- Gotta love Bing.

It really is underrated. Michael Cain does a great job as Scrooge imo.
