Turnover margin

Its been 15 seasons since we were in competition for a National Championship. In the years leading up to 2001 and virtually every year NU had a positive turnover margin then since 2001:

• two seasons with a positive turnover margin - 2003 and 2009, unfortunately both of those years we had a horrible offense - think 2009 ISU 8 turnover loss
• Not only are we negative are really negative outside of the above two years we have not been ranked above #55 most years it is at the very bottom or close to it
• As a comparison MSU over the last three years is averaging a positive 1.2 and has been ranked #4,#2 and #10

I did not bother to look but it would not surprise me if we over the last ten years are the worst college football team in turnover margin - its that bad

For a part of the game that is considered maybe the most predictive stat of winning teams NU just sucks at it - and its both sides of the ball Offense giving it away and the defense not getting turnovers both are equally bad.

Riley's first year was almost identical to Callahan's first year one was ranked 110 and Riley 119 - and they had -1.09 and a -1.09 margin respectively

I am curious as to why people think this is - keep in mind it is multiple coaches and multiple schemes

Tim Beck and Bo say there is no way to fix it.

Part of it could be since 2001 the team has often been learning a new offense or defense. The players are so busy trying to figure what position to be in, they don't establish position while defending the pass, and don't have as many guys swarming the ball on runs. Solich switched DCs, then there was Callahan, then Bo, then Beck replaced Watson, now Riley. I think Bo's defense was pretty good at getting some takeaways, but then we got Turnover Machine 1, now Turnover Machine 2 on offense. Your point has perplexed me as well.

Wondered the same thing. You would think something like turnover margin would be at least somewhat cyclical, but the Huskers have been on the downside WAY to much the last 15 years. Sam in the OWH made at least one good observation regarding this (I thought) that the overall talent level or playmakers needed on Defense to "jump a slant route" get a "strip-sack" etc. has really been missing, at least not consistent.

I think you can pin it on 3 things:

1) We haven't had a dominant college QB during that time. In nearly the decade leading up to and including 2001 we always had a QB that we could trust to make the right decision and take over games. Obviously the QB touches the ball every play and regardless of the offense, a TO prone QB can set you pretty far behind the 8 ball. Let's hope POB and/or Gebbia can change our fortune in that department.

2) With 4 coaches since 2001, I think it is safe to say we've been a team in transition for most of that time. Uncertainty breeds sloppy play.

3) We haven't had the luxury of good coaching that teaches sound FB fundamentals. I like Riley, and I think he will help fix this team's lack of fundamentals immensely in the coming years. With that being said, it is going to take time to undo a lot of the attitudes and poor coaching that hes dealt with from the prior regime.

I know people are going to say : "but, but, we won 9 games every year!!"

While that is true, I challenge anyone to tell me that we've been a fundamentally sound team that excelled at ball security at any time in the last decade. It takes time to fix poor habits. Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm not sure Rilwy is the one to fix it, but I can say I trust him more than I ever trusted Pelini and Callahan.

I wouldn't just focus on the offense, as the 2001 offense wasn't much better than this year in turning the ball over.

So, while this year was probably in the upper half of our average in offensive turnovers over the last 16 years, we were the second to worse in getting defensive turnovers. The defense was more the outlier.
