Colorado-Michigan ‘94, Nebraska-Miami ‘94. Miami had it, had Nebraska down, did a Miami. Unreal.
They would have won rather than lost their last 2 games. Then they would have hoped to get the nod over Virginia Tech to face Florida State

Would the dark years have happened after that? I too wonder about that 99 squad. All of those years from 95 through 99 were wasted opportunities.
What happens if Joe retires after 99? Who gets the job? Scrap? Do the dark years happen? Does the program regroup quicker from the dark years? Does the scandal ever happen with Joe retired?

Fascinating questions! Scrap was not yet dc in ‘99, so it would have been somebody else. We will never know if the dark years happen. The ‘99 collapse was the symptom of sickness in the program. Would an entirely new staff have prevented the dark years? Perhaps . Ganter was part of the problem so the dark years happen under him for sure if he is promoted to hc. The scandal is obviously interwoven in all of this one way or another, we’ll never fully know.
