Gonna be a long year.

On the bright side:

Buie is solid. Going to play most of the minutes at PG.
Spencer can ball.
Jones will be decent.
Young plays within himself. Nice FT stroke.

But.....
The 4* kids are terrible.
Nance is a basket case. Just terrible.
Kopp had a bad game. Look for better days ahead.
Beran is a complete zero. Needs a year on the bench to acclimate to college hoops.

As for the rest, AJ was quiet but will be what he is, streaky.
Gaines showed a MUCH better shooting touch. But his defense was terrible. Maybe he's trying too hard.
Greer just isn't a Division I player. Will give Boo a rest but cannot score.

As an aside, that #24 kid for Quincy is a nice player. Wish NU had him. Probably a 1* but had good basketball smarts and skills.

It may very well be a long year, but I have no idea how you got the above from watching this game.

Yeah I actually am optimistic after seeing that. The young guys played better than the vets in my opinion and they were both playing the same team.

Perhaps it will be a long year. Again, though, the year we made the tourney, 2015, we beat Quincy by 16. Was it even close to that today? Quincy may have been better then, but let's see how the next few games go.

Wow. Didn’t watch but not the vibe I got at all from the game thread. Weird.

This year is all about improvement. It’s good that Buie is starting out from a good place. Same for Jones/Young. We will have guys at the wings.

You mean I should stop looking for NCAA tickets?

Agreed with most of your observations except one. I don’t think Nance is terrible at all. He is a year away physically (still needs to add 15-20 pounds more, imo) but he will play positive minutes this year. You can see the beginnings of a matchup nightmare when he takes the ball down the court for an easy lay-in or can shoot floaters and hooks over shorter defenders.

I’m also not sure how Beran can be written off so quickly.

The exhibition gave no basis for the OP's harsh observations. It also gave no basis to say "all is well." I would primarily be concerned about the teams ability to play defense without fouling. Beran and our bigs will need to figure it out.

AG's defense will be just fine. His offense looks improved.

Very pleased w Greer...fun to watch his defense, he's really dialed in
Thought Nance was solid...great passes...maybe too unselfish
Hugely positive about Young's game....moves really well.
Spencer is tough...gets better every minute he's on the court...his defense is huge.
Kopp will have a good year
Beran was fine. His first game as a frosh.

So, 50,000 foot view is that the team looked to me to be very unselfish on O....and dedicated on D...we'll see how they do against better competition.

Bouie, Turner, Spencer, Kopp and Nance stood out as guys who can score.

Vastly improved PG situation.

Young was good, but need more presence in the paint.

Jones was good, but like Beran, a frosh.

Few takeaways from the game, I was there sitting close. Offense was good, shots went down, made a lot of good passes for easy baskets around the hoop but overall team defense needs to improve.

Boo played really well. He will definitely lead this offense sooner then later, if not start. Has good range and a nice stroke. Would like to see him improve his defense, but the effort was there on that end.

Jones has good size and a nice touch around the rim. He showed he has a nice mid range game too. I think he’ll be a really good ball player in a couple of years.

Spencer can hoop, their should be no doubt about that. I wouldn’t want him leading my offense but more then capable player. Athletic, smart, strong. Early in the first half he drove the lane and made a nice almost no look pass and found Jones for an easy basket. Was more impressed with that vision then the athletic ability on the ‘oop.

I wouldn’t even write off Robbie at all. I thought he played decent. Made some mistakes on D and CC called him out on it. Definitely ahead of where Nance was at this point last year. I think he needs to get use to playing against bigger bodies at this level but I can see he has a very high ceiling. I’m exciting for him.

Greer was just alright. Nothing noteworthy. Nance still needs work, but he’s getting there. You can see he put in work in the weight room. Miller was ok too, similar to what we saw at the end of last year.

Anthony looks improved. Played with a lot of confidence. AJ gonna bring that veteran leadership.

For this season they’ll have their growing pains and I think they are a year away. It’ll still be a fun team to watch if they can carry over tonight’s shooting from distance into the season and improve on D. I think CC is on track with getting this team back to playing in March.

I assumed turner's minutes were limited due to whatever injury he had earlier.

Boo is the pg we wish we had last year. He's not lacking confidence.

Spencer is exciting to watch- he knows how to get to the rim and finish. Can jump- must have had 4-5 dunks.

Gaines continues to improve and may be our best player.

I thought Nance looked better, he just needs to learn to finish. Tends to make a good move and the miss easy shots.

Kopp shot well the first half and then dried up the second half.

Beran has skill, but he's so skinny. Can't see him being able to play defense in the lane in the Big 10 this year.

But we seem to have a couple capable big bodies in Young and Jones.

We may not win more games than last year, but I can see a future nucleus forming and we should be way more exciting offensively.

One of the nice things was other than Greer we seem to have more Big 10 capable bodies this year. A lot of them are young, but they at least have the ability and physical traits to be at a minimum Big 10 rotation players.

I get why we added greer at the time, but other than being a guy who can maybe spell a starting point guard for a few min I just don't see him able to contribute much at this level.

I've had worse. Much worse.

I think the problem is Nance sort of oozes talent so some maybe expect him to be a real game changer. He was 4/8 last night with 5 rebounds so I think he's headed in the right direction. He only had one bad shot that I recall (a forced 3) which is also good- last year he forced bad shots way too often.

A couple of his misses were good looks- it's a little frustrating at times to see him make a move and get a high pct shot and then miss it.

I believe he's going to end up being a real solid Big 10 player, it may just be a year later than most of us hoped.

now that we seem to have more options Kopp needs to understand shot selection more as well. He seemed to be on early, then cooled off in the second half, but kept gunning.

Overall it was an exhibition so be interested to see how they do in the real first game. However building some confidence early never hurts.

This isn't their first exhibition game. They played 4 exhibitions in France and Italy. Just sayin'

Is there a vaccine yet for mono?? Each year it seems like one of our vip/players seems to get it during the season and we get shorthanded. If we are going to have any chance at being even average this season, all our guys have got to stay healthy. I saw this game. I think we have the possibility to be middle-of-the-pack this season. I am more optimistic after seeing this game for sure.
