Of course no one can predict how a future recruiting class is going to perform on the field, however you have to put some emphasis on star ratings, etc. After this year's final 4 finish, we had hoped it would pay off getting some big names. It hasn't.

There are many websites and magazines that cover recruiting and offer valid appraisals of players.
It's absurd and unfair (and a bit pompous) to call out others because they haven't seen high school players perform in person when one can get an idea of who could be a good player on the college level by reading and watching the videos provided on the internet. It's worked well for me for over 45 years.
Samaje Perine came on board at OU in the shadows of Joe Mixon. Some here had no idea who he was. Texas Football had Perine on its first team offense in 2013, revealing how good he was as a power runner. I figured by the information I had from reading and watching Perine's high school videos that he would play as a true freshman along with Mixon. Usually, I can gauge talent fairly well even by not watching film or seeing the player play.....not because I'm a guru, but because I take in information from different sources.
OU's recruiting is a little wobbly right now and is in need of an 11th hour rush to the finish line on February 3rd. This was not a scenario I visualized after OU's 5th place ranking and final four participation.
Strange how after OU won a big Sugar Bowl game with Alabama two years ago in 2013....then had an 11-2 record in 2015...problems cropped up unexpectedly. Trevor Knight hit a wall in 2014, as OU lost 5 games, and never was a significant player again (in part due to injury and the lack of a strong supporting cast in 2014, the Mayfield's presence in 2015). Last season, OU caught fire following a strange Texas loss, made the final four playoff, then lost its depth prematurely at QB behind Mayfield, who suffered concussions in 2 of his last 3 starts....and now faces the possibilities of having a so-so recruiting harvest.

he wasn't playing at OU next year. ou brought in the #1 juco WR and a penn st transfer WR. add on all the returning WRs and very little opportunity for a high school WR to play next year or the following.

What #1 Juco guy? If you're referring to Parker it's not looking good academically from what I've been told. He's not even listed on our commitment list now I don't believe. The transfer from PSU may help but I don't think he's replacing Neal and Shep alone.

We are well established as a passing school at this point, lost 2 of our top 3 WRs, and have arguably the most exciting QB returning next year....and we can't close on a single top WR target? It never felt like Josh's offense and I'll always wonder if our attempt to capture what Oregon had been doing was not the pitfall of an offensive mind that clearly wanted to run a shotgun spread.

And yes, Josh and Jay Norvell were also the two chosen to fall on the sword. They weren't perfect but nor were they responsible for all of our failures. They were the victims of a common practice in the business of college football....sacrificial lamb.

It was reported the switch to the zone read was Coach Stoop's idea. Basically the same offense he brought Kevin Wilson in to run while he was at Northwestern, that was shelved when we "found" what Sammy could do.

A year or so ago, someone here pointed out the consistent lack of development of our WRs besides our annual "stud" (e.g. Stills, Kelly, Broyles, Shepard). Combined with the number of highly-touted players we signed at the position that didn't pan out, made me believe we could improve by replacing Norvell.

I can't say the same for Coach Heupel. Our offenses were near the top nationally annually and only tended to struggle when we were breaking in an inexperienced QB or we lost one of our studs.

Riley has a lot to learn as well and NOW will have to do so with no experienced depth. BUT...like I said when fans got their wish and Heupel replaced Wilson, I'll support him and I like what I see in him as well, but be careful of what you wish for oh fickle fans.

What's funny, is if what you say here is true, then you are basically saying Bob Stoops has no backbone and will not stand up for his coaching staff if he feels they are the best people for the job. That's what playing the "sacrificial lamb" card implies.

If Bob felt Heupel was the man for the job, then why would he allow someone else to come in and tell him how to run his program??
