is a pretty good QB and will test this young defense very early in the season. Let's hope they're up to the task early on.

As long as we finish that game and our passing defense, isn't in the 100's. That will show improvement.

Really surprising to not see more chatter about Houston and UCLA on here. King is going to look even better with Dana coaching him. This is going to be a tough game, especially to open the season.

Not sure how rusty King will be. To come back from a serious knee injury is no easy task for a mobile QB. UCLA compares with a Baylor after losing a very large amount of talent. Not all that concerned. Houston being more of a test offensively.

King's knee wasn't all that serious; just a miniscus tear. I'm as big of a no talent schlub as you'll find & 6 weeks after I got mine cut out it was like it never happened.

? Houston better be more worried about Jalen Hurts and OU than the other way around. They are two weeks away from getting their butts handed to them.

I think OU wins, but it won't be an easy W. Any average to above average QB has sliced and diced their way through OU's defense the past fee years. And basically we have the same players. Our only hope is that they've bought into the new scheme and coaching. You don't go from #128 defense to top 20 in one off season w/o installing new players.

King is like Tate from Az.
Scheme won’t matter too much as they both improvise a ton - so OU needs to stay disciplined and tackle.

Speed is the #1 killer of ANY defense and King has it.
My hope is we limit big plays and wear em down.
Also, get a nice lead and King will force some things he shouldn’t.

Ou 38
Houston 21

Agree.
I see a score something like a 40-35 OU win.
OU must have Hurts settled in at QB, its offensive line clicking, its kicking game solid and a least 2-3 defensive stops to contain Houston.....but then, that applies to every game this year.
I also think playing in Norman will be huge for OU.
One thing is certain: we will know right off the bat what kind of team OU has for 2019 against a quality opponent.

disagree to a point.
NFL has pre season football to work a few kinks out.

Any CFB team in Week 1 won't necessary show what they are made of right out of the gate.
It's unfortunate that this game will count, just like the others........but no way will anyone be peaking in Week 1

In the openers OU has had since 2000...against only four teams with decent reputations....OU has struggled out of the gate.
2001...beat NC 41-27
2005...lost to TCU 17-10
2009....lost to BYU 14-13
2016...lost to Houston 33-23
These 4 games revealed to some degree how good OU was going to be that season.
Otherwise, openers with UTEP, No.Texas, Bowling Green, Tulsa, UAB, Tenn-Chattanooga, Utah State, La.-Monroe, La. Tech, Akron and Fla. Atlantic were not nearly as revealing, if at all.
So it depends on the opponent and how OU prepares for that opponent. I'm sure Riley's team is preparing with increased energy to play an opener vs a team like Houston, especially after what happened in 2016.
As for the NFL, the preseason of practice games (and fan ripoff) does not insure that any team will hit the ground running to start the season.

Opening games are head scratchers at times. When opening with a quality opponent a team is going to have to be ready to play four quarters compared to playing a glorified pasty.

I think the defense is going to get tested right out of the gate and OU is going to need its offense to match point for point in the first half. Hopefully in the second half the defense settles down and starts to come together a little. I do believe Grinch will turn this D around as the year goes on but it may be October before we see the steady improvement.

Houston is going to be a dangerous game in my opinion. Hope I am wrong but I could see this one ending up in a 42 - 38 type game.

I agree w/ everything but the (fan ripoff) commentary. It's a free market system and when the product is not worth it, the fans will not buy them. While seeing an NFL pre-season game is not on my list of things to do, it is for many.

I'm an advocate of free markets too.
And I know that sloppy, meaningless preseason games make money for the owners, networks, sponsors and concession people while season ticket holders are required to pay full ticket prices for two preseason games.
But NFL coaches and fans generally prefer a 2-3 game preseason...while owners and networks want the current preseason length.
Personally, I don't see pro football as a better product than college football, even with 4 preseason games.

Living in Houston I get a lot of UH coverage. They are loaded on O...lots of speed and King is legit. They have something like 17 transfers in on D so a lot depends on how well they blend in to the system. The battle between our new D and the Coug' O is going to be interesting.

Very Interesting. This will not be an EZ game at all.

Houston is an unknown opponent. Holgerson will have made changes. One of Holgerson's drawbacks was that he was predictable, He developed some top shelf talent but never got to the next level. Is Houston's offense this year better than West Virginia's last year? Riley has Dana's number. OU 48 - Houston 21

UH fan coming in peace.

#1. King isn't thought of as a runner first, the dude can sling it. He is a much better passer than Greg Ward Jr was imo.

#2. UH lost a bunch on defense but has had a lot of transfers. Are the transfers any good? and even if they are, will they be able to jell in time?

#3. UH returns a decent amount on offense and not so much on defense. I could see a relatively high scoring game. I do wonder what sort of improvements OU's D will have with the new DC who I think highly of.

Hoping for a competitive injury-free game.
