UK has not been a #1 seed for 10 years and running

I could not fall asleep last night and started thinking of the last time we were a 1 seed, and it was actually the 2015 team. I love UK basketball, but we need to stop being so delusional that we are a top 5 program anymore. I’m sure I could use AI to find out, but I’d be curious to see how many weeks after Jan 1st each year over that stretch we have been ranked in the top 10. Cal’s teams were always ranked way too high to start the season post 2015, and that was the only reason we were in the top 5-10 at all most years. We are not IU, but we are certainly not what we should be. Apathy continues….

We went into the tournament in ‘17 as the best team in the country. I think we were a 2 seed but we were the best team.

Cal didn’t need to be a 1 seed to get to the FF.

He took UK to the FF 4 times. ‘12 and ‘15 were 1 seeds.

His other 2 FF’s at UMass and Memphis I believe he was 1 seeds.

UK was in contention for the FF almost every year of the Cal era.

‘13, ‘16, ‘21 and ‘23 were not really contenders. ‘16 did win the SEC though.

Cal had his own agenda and he screwed UK.
He PO'd Nike so Duke became their #1 go to school.
He pushed his five stars instead of putting the best team on the floor. He also pushed them out the door ready or not to make room for the next great things.
The player’s first thing was why I thought it was time for Cal to go.

I never held it against him because he said it when he was hired and preached it everyday after that.

You can’t fault a guy for doing what he said he would do.

He just needed to do it somewhere else.

I said from the time I started posting here that I wanted a program first coach at UK even if he wasn’t as good a coach as Cal.

I certainly didn’t mean this though.

Just another example to be careful what you wish for.

Not good. To tell you the truth, not being a serious SEC championship contender since 2020 bothers me more.

For all the insane amount of talent that we had over the last twenty years we’ve only had two truly “dominant” teams, 12 and 15. And we won a championship with one. Otherwise we always seemed to have a fatal flaw that couldn’t be overcome with any sort of creative coaching or scheme or trying something to overcome it.

Yea can everyone stop talking about we will become Indiana. We are Indiana. Especially to the young men that play college ball. We are a joke now days in men’s sports. This isn’t my opinion. This is just what it is. Don’t gotta like it. Can say na we aren’t quite there yet. Yes we are.

We fell off before NIL and we are falling farther back after NIL. I’m a UK fan so yea it sucks but let’s be honest. At least Indiana has cared enough to spend the money and become legit.

I care nothing about Indiana but this whole forum seems to always say we’re headed to Indiana territory. We’ve been there. Look around.

Before Calipari got here, we had five years without a #1 seed. You chose to make the wrong point for your presupposition

Calipari did less with more than any coach in history. Come on Ellen. You know this.

This is spot on. Calipari had great talent every year. However, he missed the tournament twice somehow, and choked away chance after chance with superior talent. He damn near choked away the title game against Kansas.

I’ll give Cal a break for those years around Covid. The man had a couple players pass away and it was just a tough time on top of all the bad stuff that was going on. I always thought we were to hard on Cal while all of that was going on. Terrance Clark and the other tall walk on we had.

I can’t go with you on this. It’s not all about his choke jobs coaching. It really isn’t. My issue with him was his constant smart *** comments about our fans, our State, our tradition. That’s my biggest issue with him.

He had wide open layups to be a legend here, and somehow screwed it up.

Agreeed that was the only reason I wanted him gone. I never got mad about the losses because even the years we were bad with him we were a couple small things away from being a title contender. He went 9-16 but we were still favorites to win it all several years after that. Pope shouldn’t have the grace Cal did.

A bit of ganja would help with UK basketball insomnia, among other various ailments.

Agree for the most part but the Monk / Fox team's only flaw was running into a crooked referee. That UNC game was the title game.

Idk 2017 was damn good! Real good! Also, the SEC officiating is absolute trash! Can’t convince me it hasn’t cost us more than a few SEC titles during that span. Hell, 2016 with that technical on Humphries literally cost us the SEC title.
