UK also claims to have the trademarked the number "8" when presented in the colors of blue and white.

I could understand if their logo was anything like UK's logo but there is absolutely no similarity. This is terrible publicity and I hope apologies are coming. It's so bad I may search out unlicensed stuff just to support the "little guys".

How does the stat government produce anything with "Kentucky" on it if it's trademarked?

I thought Kentucky trademarked the name Kentucky back in the nineties. Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC. Kentucky Derby became Run For the Roses. Neil Diamond pulled Kentucky Woman off the radio. Did I make all that up?

Go to KFC's website, says "Kentucky Fried Chicken" at the very top.

The objection is them trying to trademark their shirts, not that they are using the word "Kentucky"...not quite the same thing as you subject header suggest.

"The letter also asks the company to continue its current behavior in not making anyone think its products are produced by or part of UK. Schlafer said UK does not object to the word "Kentucky" in the company's name, only its attempt to trademark its T-shirts.

"They've done nothing to make anyone feel that we're related, and we ask them to continue to behave that way," Schlafer said. "It's not that we want to control how people behave ... we can certainly coexist; we're not asking them to stop doing anything other than register a potentially confusing mark in the same category that we have a trademark registered in.""

I still have an issue with "Kentucky" being trademarked for T-Shirts. Is UK really suggesting that no one can trademark a T-shirt with the word Kentucky in it other than them? I'll not feel bad about buying knock-off UK gear if that's the case.

Agreed. I wonder if the "Kentucky kicks ***" shirts are trademarked? I'd like to see the university sue the state.
