UNC Shot Selection

I couldn't help but think UNC shot themselves in the foot last night with how their offense was run. Marshall came back into the game with 10:51 and he was rarely placed in a situation where he'd be tempted to foul. UNC took way too many jump shots. I re-watched the last 11 minutes and here's how UNC shot selection boils down:

Joel Berry: 0-6 fg; 0-5 on jumpers; layup attempt was block + 2 airballs on jumpers
Marcus Paige: 0-5 fg; 0-4 on jumpers
Isaiah Hicks: 1-2 fg; made off-balanced jumper in the paint
Justin Jackson: 1-3 fg; 0-1 on jumpers
Brice Johnson: 1-1; made dunk
Kennedy Meeks: 1-2; made layup, other layup was blocked

4 for 19 overall in the final 11 minutes; 1 for 11 on jumpers. Keep in mind that three of the layup attempts came on a fast break where Paige missed it, Jackson missed the tip, and then finally put it through the basket with about 6:50 left. And what about Brice Johnson? He gets one shot attempt in the final 11 minutes? Awesome. Solid, solid coaching job by Roy. lol

One thing I can say with relative certainty, UNC is not winning a title this year. I can't recall seeing a worse jump shooting team since my 6th grade christian school league. Even if they "get hot" for a bit, they certainly can't sustain it for 6 games in a row, while at the same time getting out-coached and out-hustled.

Another thing, I actually don't even dislike anyone on their team, which is rare.

Third thing, how is Marcus Paige so bad? Is it because he is playing off the ball? His draft stock is tanking worse than McADoodle's did.

Fourth thing, UNC won't be as bad as we thought next year. Meeks, Jackson, and Berry don't look like they are ready to go to the league early. Pinson and Hicks aren't even getting meaningful minutes to be considered. So it looks like the whole gang will be back. I seem to recall a thread on THR this year where one poster listed every player not named Luke Maye as a surefire NBA first or second rounder. I think someone even said Joel James was a top 20 player. Maybe that was a dream?

How on God's green earth they weren't going inside on every position in the second half is beyond me. I know our D got a lot tougher when we went man to man in the second half, but sheesh, I was shocked. Absolutely shocked! Very pleasantly shocked! :)

Very similar to the 2012 game. Not only did UNC never pull away in either year (it felt like it could happen at any moment both games), but they got away from what got them the lead. I remembering Zeller having a monster 1st-half; he was rarely utilized in the second half, much like UNC and Brice Johnson in the final 12 minutes.

2nd half was NCAA tourney type game with grind it out possessions, 1st half was wide open ball. UNC simply couldn't adjust.

Zeller had a monster 2nd half too. He tipped in the ball with 15 seconds left to bring us within 1!!

lol that was one of his finest moments as a tarheel. In that very same game, Zeller had another very graceful moment as he was clearly ambushed by Austin Rivers in the face. Mighty fine performance.
