I have yet to figure out what part of "college basketball coach" he excels at. Like most of the time, he was completely out coached at the end of the game yesterday. His players constantly look like they have no idea what to do in late end game situations.

I don't miss the days when Illinois could come back from a 10 point deficit on the road with like 45 seconds left because some opponent couldn't inbound a ball or handle a press.

He's a good impersonator of Gene Keady.

He's as insufferable as Tim Beckman, but he's doing well in recruiting and their frenetic style on defense has messed us up both years now. I can't figure out what their goals are on offense, and they have too many turnovers. But he's a good coach, better than Groce or late-era Weber.

Gene Keady was a much better Coach.
I met Gene Keady and his wife once at the bar at PJ Clarke's in Battery Park here in NYC. This was back when he was helping out Steve Lavin at St. John's. He was wearing a Purdue hat but was surprisingly understated about his past. With the gap on I did not see his recognizable "hairline" and his wife actually brought up that he coached there. He could not have been nicer. I was really surprised.

I've read and heard numerous reports over the years about how Keady's off-court demeanor is much different than the guy we saw scowling for years at courtside. Of course you probably needed to wear a game face to go up against Bobby Knight year after year.

I have a couple if HS buddies that played football at Purdue and they said Keady was a great guy.

It brings a great smile to my face every time I think about how Gene Keady turned around and gave me directly as much as I gave him. I deserved it, and it was fabulous!!

I might even go as far as to say he's underrated as a coach.

And he's got a hell of a coaching tree ...

Recruiting, apparently. The Illini just landed a 5-star center.
