Univ of Chicago to incoming frosh: "No 'trigger warnings' or 'safe spaces' here"

via TIME:

"The University of Chicago writes that it believes such actions do not foster intellectual freedom, but intellectual fear:

Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.

Fostering the free exchange of ideas reinforces a related University priority—building a campus that welcomes people of all backgrounds. Diversity of opinion and background is a fundamental strength of our community. The members of our community must have the freedom to espouse and explore a wide range of ideas.

The letter was sent to incoming students in August."

I think the PC insanity and SJW stuff is way overblown. It just goes viral every single time it happens. I've worked at Centre for 6 years now and in that time I haven't seen anything even close to some of the craziness from Yale, Missouri, Claremont, Portland State, etc. And I've always been of the opinion that Centre is way more liberal than the average place.

Common sense helps a lot.

it's overblown because there are way more people crying about PC stuff than people who actually are PC

I would like to see just how tolerant they would be the first time somebody openly states a conservative based opinion. How tolerant would they be of a group of Pro-Lifers protesting on campus. I would like to see their guest speaker list. I'm doubting there will be any conservative guest speakers.

For the record, I'm an in betweener, but I am a bit fed up with the overly PC crowd.

A free exchange of thoughts, ideas, opinions and view points on a college campus? What a novel idea! Maybe there's hope for our youth after all. Assuming others may try this approach as well.

SJW's are extremely dangerous.

University of Chicago had Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell.

It's the home of the Monetarist school of economics. They are to the study of economics what UK is to college hoops. They spit out Nobel winners the way Cal signs McD AAs.

Because of Friedman, I've considered it a "bastion" of Libertarian thought. So, they're going to love freedom - but not be about coercion.

The speech codes are written in every syllabus that I had and there's protests ever time a Republican comes to campus. I think it might be more "normal" in the Midwest but the insanity is rampant.

This signage is a common site on my former university campus.

Laughable. Colleges are filled with SJWs. They rule the roost. Anyone that comes to campus who disagrees with them gets their speeches hijacked, gets a simple disagreement called "hate speech" among a plethora of other examples.

A democrat trying to downplay how rampant PC craziness is, is pretty funny. This is the same party who is terrified to offend Muslims by simply stating the truth of violence from Muslims.

In a sense, the political left's attempts to silence ideas they cannot, or will not, debate are a confession of intellectual bankruptcy. But this is just one of the left's ever-increasing restrictions on other people's freedom to live their lives as they see fit, rather than as their betters tell them.

The left is not necessarily aiming at totalitarianism. But their know-it-all mindset leads repeatedly and pervasively in that direction, even if by small steps, each of which might be called "micro-totalitarianism."

- Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. He wrote this for Sun-Sentinel.

You don't seem particularly bright.

Thanks.

I did not realize you could get a conceal carry permit in Illinois now. (last state in the union) I see you have to have the state permit. They do not have a reciprocity law like most states do though.

I'm not overly concerned with your knowledge regarding Chicago's gun laws. My comment was more directed at the fact that you "hate" a world class city based solely on the fact that you didn't think you would be allowed to have a gun there.

Don't care what you think then.

Had to look up SJW. I knew what a social justice warrior was just not the abbreviation. I was kind of hoping you all were referencing the Sally Jo Wildcats of the world.
