U.S. attack sub arrives at Navy base in Cuba a day after Russian fleet docks in Havana

A U.S. fast-attack nuclear-powered submarine arrived at Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba, on Thursday, a day after a Russian navy fleet that also included a modern submarine pulled into the port of Havana ahead of Russian military exercises in the Caribbean that are raising tensions in the region.

The U.S. Southern Command, based in Doral, said in a statement that the USS Helena was in Guantanamo Bay, in eastern Cuba, where the U.S. has a base, as part of a “routine port visit.” The Southern Command noted that “the vessel’s location and transit were previously planned.”

One Southcom official told McClatchy that the Helena’s movements were scheduled before the United States learned of the Russian deployment plans. The Navy saw “no reason to alter previously planned, routine activity in response to Russian activity in the region,” the official said.

But the timing and optics of a U.S. nuclear submarine arriving in Cuba when Russian warships are in Havana are being seen as another effort to send a message of strength to the Kremlin.

U.S. Navy warships plan to follow the Russian naval flotilla visiting the region if it crosses the Caribbean and sails to Venezuela, as is expected, two U.S. officials told McClatchy and the Miami Herald.

The U.S. vessels — including three destroyers, a Coast Guard cutter and a maritime reconnaissance aircraft — have closely monitored the Russian fleet as it entered the Western Hemisphere and sailed within 30 miles of Florida’s coast on its way to Havana.

Not feeling super comfy today being possibly in range of russian naval weapons. Then again they're incompetent in the first place.

Complacency and corruption have turned the Russian military into crap. The world knows this. Sending a token flotilla to the Caribbean doesn't change anything. It's Vlad's attempt to project power he doesn't have but the average Russian doesn't know that. At home it'll be sold as the glorious Russian Navy sailing triumphantly past the USA while the incompetent Americans were too afraid to challenge them. It'll be fun to see what sort of military exercises they have in mind. I can't imagine anything too elaborate with four Russian vessels plus whatever decrepit Soviet era ships Cuba can muster. I'd also bet the Russian vessels have less than half their full complement of sailors since the trip has nothing to do with training and readiness. It's Putin trying to create a diversion from his Ukraine debacle.

Well, if it helps, the Russians sent a submarine, two surface ships, and an ocean going tugboat. The tugboat's purpose is to tow any of the others back to Russia when they break down. Apparently that is somewhat common. It's like a marathon runner having a couple of guys push a gurney behind him.

That's so funny. I know their one carrier needs a tug and pollutes the water where ever it's dragged to. You could knock it out easily by looking for the smoke it belches.

Some of the busiest ships in the Soviet Navy during the Cold War were tugs, repair ships, and search and rescue ships.

Check out the saga of K-129.

If Russia intends to launch their missiles my way, today would be good. It’s supposed to rain. Tomorrow and Sunday would be inconvenient. Supposed to be a nice weekend.

Heritage Foundation stats (plus other polling sites estimates combined)

United States population - 309-320+ million (est.)
EU population - 345+ million (est. and growing with new additions)

Russia population - 120+/- million (est. with losses)

What are we waiting for - haven't you ever heard -- 'I will only say this once - I will speak clearly, walk quietly and carry a big stick!'

The Russian navy, though they have subs that carry nuclear weapons, is in shambles.. Ukraine without any credible navy vessels has pretty much neutered the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Crimea with drones. Their supposed super carrier can barely make it out of port with continual major maintenance issues. Russian naval task forces often travel with salvage vessels because of continue maintenance issues. The Russians have many logistics issues across all of their armed forces. The real threat is Communist China.

That was a good summary of all the incompetence.

In terms of who's a threat or not, I'll tell a fun story from Summertime at Cedarbook.

Looking at what russia is doing to Ukraine, you can see the incompetence, the grift, the poor planning, just a poor excuse for an invasion. They can't stand up to NATO. But they don't have to because they are still totally fouling and destroying Ukraine while flailing and emptying their war chest. They can't win but they can destroy cities and the environment and cause widespread misery.

It reminds me of when one of my roommates passed out and peed on the couch at PSU. When we woke him up to chastise him for this poor behavior he was like an enraged zombie. He could probably take me usually, but at this point, anyone could knock him out. But I don't even want to be near him, he's soaked. I don't want to fight at all right now! So of course he grapples with me and soils me in the process. I "won" the fight by subduing him and throwing him out, but he won the war by covering me in his filth.

That is what russia is right now. They can't effectively beat you, but they can ruin everything by soiling you. Sorry for long, gross post but I really liked the analogy once it got going. Shame on you, ECW Mike!

1982, 83, 84, 85, 86, Flight Deck of the Eisenhower, CVN69, The greatest carrier to ever churn through water. We were in the Med. During those years we were always being trailed by a string of Russian ships whose purpose was to watch air ops and figure out to do the same and to grab every piece of garbage that didn’t get incinerated and was deemed as being OK to dispose of overboard. A wood pallet for instance. We would always have close support from a group of ships, often including a BB class ship, yes, A Battleship. The Russian ships would sit a couple of hundred yards behind us.

Because we stayed on station for many months, every now and again, the carrier would conduct an air show for the crew that never saw sunlight and also for the Russians. A bunch of aircraft would launch, the crew would come up on deck, the show would unfold and some of the support ships would fire off a round as well to give everyone a thrill. One time, one of the Russian escorts fired off a round, probably to have a little fun of their own and acknowledge what they saw. It was taken in good spirit. Their ships were pretty pathetic and as evening set, we would continue to operate and they would move further off.

On one of our cruises, we had a USO show visit, Steve Stills, Greg Rollie, a couple of guys from Cheap Trick and a few others made up the band. It was pretty cool with a concert in the hangar bay one night. The band had to stay on board for a couple Of days. The Topside Crew hosted them on the flight deck one morning so they could watch ops, get some air, hang out and talk with the crew. The Russian ships being a couple of hundred yards right behind us really freaked them out. They could not get over that there were Russians right behind us picking up our garbage. LOL.

Interesting listen.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Macgregor appeared on three Fox News programs in February and early March to speak in support of Russia's actions. Three days after the war began, he said "The battle in eastern Ukraine is really almost over," and predicted "If [Ukraine] don't surrender in the next 24 hours, I suspect Russia will ultimately annihilate them." Macgregor said he believed Russia should be allowed to seize whatever parts of Ukraine it wanted. In his second appearance, he revised his prediction: "The first five days Russian forces I think frankly were too gentle. They've now corrected that. So, I would say another 10 days this should be completely over... I think the most heroic thing he could do right now is come to terms with reality. Neutralize Ukraine."

Yeah, not listening to anything that guy says. Total clown show. Clearly paid by Putin, or he likes the taste of Putin's member

I was on the USS Pharris FF-1094 within a couple Ike battle groups back then. Russians thought it was a great idea to sail between oilers and ships refueling. ********.

I was on a fast attack sub based out of Norfolk in the 1980s, the Russian "fishing" boats would wait just outside the international border. Of course they weren't fishing boats, they had all kinds of sonar and listening arrays to try and get sound cuts (signatures). It was always fun to blow sanitary tanks as went by outbound and again inbound.
