This is a huge deal and no one seems to care.

1. Is there anyway this can be stopped?
2. Are we pretty much screwed after this happens?

Pretty amazing that countries that hate America will be controlling our internet, and nobody is talking about it.

it's not a big deal at all. it's like germany saying they want to cede control of the mp3 standard. the IP is one of thousands of networking protocols. We just forced the rest of the world to change their telecom to march to our tune. "giving away" control at this stage is a meaningless gesture.

Unfortunately I've heard "its not a big deal" many times over the last several years, and it usually ends up wrong.

Our government is going to let the UN control the internet. Sounds like a pretty awful idea to me. I'll be pleasantly surprised if something bad doesn't happen with this.

It's because you don't understand the meaning.
No, I do get it. You've proven to not get it over and over.

Only a GD moron would think letting other countries control our internet will go well. Hell, our own government does a piss poor job already, what makes you think it will go over well with other countries controlling it?

You trust our horrible government to be doing this if they thought this is a good idea? Our terrible corrupt government is selling our internet out to other countries. I'm sure there's no way that'll go wrong. Some of the countries that will control our internet don't even allow youtube to be watched, among other censorship in their own countries. And those people will now be controlling our internet. You're right, what could possibly go wrong?

We are ceding control. You are a fool to believe otherwise. While it may be "governed" by some international entity, it's not too hard to imagine censorship becoming the norm if countries like China, Russia, Iran, etc, have any sway.

This is similar to these "free trade" acts. Again, it's a poor path to head down.

Are people this dumb? Do you really think we govern the Internet? Make decisions which website is good? Maybe which IP is acceptable? Control who can use it?

I am really glad this is the second post in the thread. However, it appears that a few people have skipped this.

The Internet is awesome. For example, I now know there are far more dumb, ignorant, and/or gullible people than I ever would have guessed. Not sure if that makes me fell better or worse, but it's good to know.

Maybe after the election on a slow news day I'll post stories about the Depository Trust Company - the shadowy organization that actually owns (legally) $10 trillion of your stocks. Buy my gold coins!

Wait, you mean aside from your fundamental misunderstanding of the entire article and underlying issue, you also missed the part where it clearly says that control is not being ceded to the UN? "'If the Republicans successfully delay the transition, America's enemies are sure to pounce. Russia and its allies could push to shift control of the internet's core functions to a government body like the UN where they have more influence.'"

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

Obama doesn't want it to appear that we consider ourselves superior to the rest of the world, so give away the net to the peons. Brilliant!!!!!
Whatever kind of coal-powered generator that you have hooked up to your trailer, please turn it off. No more internet for you today.

Anyone actually looked into this? Thought I had already read that a group out of LA would be in control now and that they were pretty much all along, just regulated by the Gov.

All you really need to know is a) China is bullying ppl about it, b) don't read anything from the US about this, c) it's an information and communication treaty, and d) *europe* doesn't even want the ****.

So wtf you think is gonna happen with this worldwide propaganda machine?

People talking technical stuff are wayyyyyy behind. That stuff certainly ain't important, like they say, and they're just playing dumb/trolling, basically.

The organization responsible is known as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN. One of my former co-workers, Jeff Reid, is Vice-President of IT operations.
