The same old reward the big name programs are present again in the pre-season coaches poll. Clemson is the defending champs so I guess they received seven first place votes for that.

Michigan however, being ranked #9 despite losing most of their star players is ridiculous. The Cards are #17 which surprised me. I figured we would be #23 or something. That will probably be the case with the AP pole.

And I know these polls mean nothing until the playoff committee starts their polls later in the season. I'm just a bit bored at work today.

Isn't it nice to have a respected/ranked/bowl team year in and year out? For those of you who haven't been around longer, this level of national respect, rankings and acheivement wasn't always the case. We had an occasional "good" team here and there (1990's Fiesta Bowl winner over Bama being one), but only 4 bowl games and 3 Final Team rankings to show for it before 1998. Since the arrival of John L. Smith in '98, Louisville began a string of 16 straight bowl teams (only interrupted by the 3 year dark period of SK) and 8 Final team rankings highlighted by 2 #6 Final rankings in '04 and '06. And now, we begin each season with legitimate high expectations, opportunities to be and play highly ranked teams during the regular season, and the national exposure to highlight our elite players against some of the country's best as well. Damn, we've come a LONG way baby!

I can see your gripe with Michigan. I'm pretty sure they have the fewest starters returning in FBS. But Clemson is still going to be good even without Watson. They have probably the best DLine in College Football with guys like Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins. And they have good skill players and a great Offensive line returning. I think you're selling them short.

Guess I'm getting greedy which is bad I suppose. Don't care. I want more.

We have the returning Heisman Trophy winner with a decent supporting cast. Winning 10 games playing this schedule is a real possibility. Split with Clemson FSU; win the rest and people will be talking about the playoffs. Can't lose to anyone else other than Clemson or FSU though. Lose to anyone else on this schedule and playoff talk will be gone.

I'll do you 1 better, I'm thinking 11-1.

I'm not saying Clemson is going to lose 4 or more games. Only they lost the majority of the players that won the championship and that has to be figured in with their pre-season ranking.

Watson, Williams, Gallman and Bouleware is a big loss for the Tigers. Imagine the Cards losing Jackson, Hearns, along with Radcliffe and Quick. We would be lucky to receive votes.

I know Clemson still has some great players but I don't know about their ranking other than their standing for what they achieved the past two years. And that's fine. I look forward to Louisville football earning the same respect.

Coaches voting in a national poll is kind of a joke anyway.

Coaches' careers count on them spending the vast majority of their scouting looking at the teams they'll play. They have no real incentive to know anything about the other teams and probably don't.

Why would Petrino need to know anything about Stanford? Or Harbaugh about Kansas State? Yet if these guys are in the poll this year, they'll have to vote on those teams.

Clemson's defense is going to be their strength plus they have had top 10 and top 5 recruiting classes since Dabo turned the tide.
