Away from the cancel culture nonsense...

Europeans are better at team names, I don’t know why we name our sports teams after animals random nouns.

PSG
Manchester United
Borussia Monchengladbach

Who does it offend?
The crowd that looks for any reason to be offended. Have to say, had to look up their reasons this time as they are reaching as always.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/11/sports/valparaiso-drops-crusader-mascot.html

The private university in Indiana, which is affiliated with the Lutheran Church, said the Crusader name could be associated with “aggressive religious oppression and violence.”

The university, whose name is frequently shortened to Valpo, adopted the Crusader as its mascot in 1942, a nod to the Christian conquests of the Holy Land from the 11th century to the 13th century that pitted European invaders against Muslims. The mascot costume features a suit of armor, a helmet and a shield.

“Unfortunately, the Crusader and its symbols related to the Crusades have been embraced and displayed by hate groups,” Ms. Irwin-Knott said. “In fact, a newspaper of the K.K.K. carries the name The Crusader, and this is not something we want to be connected with Valparaiso University in any way.”

During last month’s deadly siege at the U.S. Capitol, white supremacists brought with them their variant of the Crusader cross, which has become popular among the racist and anti-Semitic fringes. It was not immediately clear if that element of the attack had contributed to the university’s decision to retire the Crusader as its mascot.

“Mascots are intended to help us show our school spirit and represent Valpo values, rather than be divisive and symbolize negativity,” Ms. Steinhiser said. “There has been a growing concern from students on campus about how the current Crusader mascot represents us, as well as how it may impact prospective students’ views of our university.”

And that crowd is getting bigger every day. It's the new hip, trendy thing to be a part of. A group that is offended by anything and everything. I remember views of many people the same age as I am back in the day while either living at home or going to school and coming back home during the summer. So many radical (for the time) ideas they had. Flash forward a few years when a spouse, mortgage, utility bills and children happen and suddenly many of those ideas went the way of bell bottoms and leisure suits. Which coincidently, I really liked bell bottoms and a sweet pastel colored leisure suit with a wildly darker colored shirt

The Crusades are by far the biggest reason why all the religious conflict has been occurring in the Middle East for over a thousand years and were the catalyst for much of the extremist Islamic terrorism that has happened ever since.
Utter ********. Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and facist Italy literally tried to destroy the world less than 100 years ago and they are well respected and productive members of the world community today. And you want to justify Islamic extremism on something that happened many centuries ago? OK. LOL. Your agenda is not only showing, but glaring.

So a private institution no longer wants to be associated with oppression and violence in the name of Christianity, and we’re supposed to be upset by this? I applaud them from separating themselves from that imagery. If there are any private institutions out there called The Witch Burners, The Blasphemer Beheaders, or The Alterboy Rapers I hope they follow suit.

People are making this about "who was offended" when it looks much more like "this mascot doesn't represent our values and we are choosing not to associate with "crusader" imagery or treat it as something positive."

-utter revisionist ********. Colored by a "modern" view that christianity/western culture is responsible for all the ills of the world. intellectually lazy.

-the crusades were a *reaction* to violent and aggressive islamist expansionism. This fact doesn't excuse atrocities that were perpetrated by western folk...simply points to the fact that atrocities were universal, as in usually the case in conflict.

-really wish people had a better grasp of history.

Every team will be named non-binary. No winners. No losers. No scores kept. Just teams passing the ball back and forth until time expires. Meet at mid court and hug and exchange long looks until someone cries.
They will just keep giving each other the ball until time expires with no score so that everyone can get a ribbon for good sportsmanship.

Thank you, Muslims are still enslaving people. Those people would probably be glad for a crusade right about now.

No, it’s about society today. I guarantee someone has complained about the name/mascot or the school is simply taking a preemptive action before someone does. The name has been around for decades and they just now decided to change it out of thin air? No. It’s the sickening cancel culture run amuck and everyone and every institution is simply rolling over on its back and waving the white flag. The world is full of pussies.

I don't see why people get upset about this...

If the school or team decides on their own. Who cares? Frankly, I think their logic is "sound" and I'm definitely not a snowflake cancel culture guy.

Do you actually think they done it on their own ? In their press release it says

"The private university in Indiana, which is affiliated with the Lutheran Church, said the Crusader name could be associated with “aggressive religious oppression and violence.”

Read it again, could be associated.....seems like they did it either because they were afraid it was about to become an issue or there had been someone say something already, just hadn't become a huge issue as of yet.

In today's society anything could be taken anyway the person looking at it wants to interpret it. People wanting teams associated with any type of Indian mascot needs to be changed. Never mind that the Seminole Nation in Florida said they were proud Florida State used them as a mascot people who had nothing to do but look to create problems were saying it needed to be changed.

Actually bkingUK who said use names like Manchester United instead of animal names is probably on to something. After all isn't it the use of animals offensive to vegans? I actually like what the team in our nations capital called themselves this year - The Washington Football team. Just use your town or school's name followed by what sport. The University of Kentucky Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball or Tiddly Winks Team. Although I'm pretty sure that would eventually offend someone.
