Matt Lottich was a three-sport standout at New Trier. I believe he was coached by Rick Malnati, father of Tino. Matt played his college hoops at Stanford. He was 24-9 in his first year at Valpo last year and 8-2 this year.

Didn't KO go hard after Lottich? Wasn't NU one of his finalists if not THE bridesmaid?

Interesting that Chris Collins coaches Rick Malnati's son while Rick Malnati coaches Chris Collins' son.

Heard a story about Lottich that his mom left when he was little (kindergartenish) and his dad and he shared a one bedroom apartment in Winnetka. The kid got the bedroom and the dad slept on the couch. The kid went on to be the starting QB on the football team, went D1 in basketball, and hit like over 400 in baseball. If true, very cool human interest story. Supposedly the dad still lives in the one bedroom apartment in Winnetka

Mentioned it last night on the broadcast. In addition, Matt’s father went to University of Chicago and initially had a high powered job but changed to being a plumber I believe so he could be there for Matt. Very nice story

I think what was said on broadcast was that the father was a graduate student in Chicago and had to quit and get a job as a carpenter because he could not support his son while being a student. What a chief.

He could have played any of the three sports at the college level and to this day I still think he would have had the best career in football. His passion was always hoops though. It's crazy to see him coaching a D1 team from our HS days at NT.

I must have misunderstood CCC then because he talked about the links between the program and some of the players and mentioned Malnati and Chris's son.

Rick still lives in Northfield, so maybe he coaches him locally at a gym? Malnati is a great guy and one heck of a coach.

If Collins' son is not in high school yet, it would be possible to Malnati to coach him in some summer camp or youth program.

Rick Malnati was 2 years ahead of me at New Trier West, and was a pretty good point guard, leading the team his senior year downstate where we fell to Collinsville and Kevin Stallings in the state quarterfinals.
